*Project Hadar* Is Underway! CDPR Is Building a Brand-New Universe This Time

When I opened my messages on the subway, I saw that CDPR had made another move. For a casual player like me, the most comforting thing about this kind of news isn’t that I’ll get to play it right away, but that I can already catch a hint of a new world.

This time, the spotlight is on Project Hadar. It’s neither The Witcher nor an extension of Cyberpunk, but a brand-new IP that CD Projekt Red is currently pushing forward. The company recently revealed that the project has now entered the early concept development stage, and overall progress has been steady, with no major issues so far.

Put simply, it’s still far from the stage of releasing trailers or showing gameplay footage. Right now, the team is more like building a house from scratch, first locking down the most fundamental pieces. For example, how the world is structured, what kind of presence the key characters should have, and which direction the game’s core mechanics should take. These things may sound abstract, but they’re actually crucial—like choosing the tea base before ordering milk tea. Whether it ends up sweet or smooth depends on this very step.

Judging from the official messaging, CDPR’s current strategy is also pretty clear: run multiple projects in parallel, while advancing each one at its own pace. Project Hadar belongs to the very earliest batch, where the priority isn’t rushing production, but figuring out clearly what it should become in the future. Internally, the studio seems fairly optimistic about it and sees it as an important step toward building a new story universe.

So what does this mean for players? I think it’s best not to get so excited that you start popping champagne just yet. Because the phrase “early concept development,” translated into plain language, basically means: they’re still laying the foundation, and there’s still a long way to go before more content is officially revealed—or before full production even begins. For now, it makes more sense to treat this as a signal: CDPR doesn’t want to rely solely on The Witcher and Cyberpunk anymore, and is trying to create another new flagship franchise that can be developed over the long term.

On top of that, looking at broader trends, it’s actually a good thing that major studios are still willing to pour resources into original IPs. The risks are higher, and it’s easier for people to grow impatient waiting, but compared with endlessly leaning on past successes, at least it brings some freshness. Especially for someone like me, who doesn’t enjoy digging through complicated lore, a new IP is actually more welcoming—everyone starts from zero, and there’s no pressure to catch up on ten years of story.

That said, it’s worth a reminder: what’s been announced this time is still just a direction, not a finished product. If you’re hoping to see gameplay details, art style, or platform information, you’ll most likely have to keep waiting for now. My advice is simple: keep an eye on it, but don’t spend your expectations in advance. Treat it like one of those “this could be really fun in the future” saves you come across during your commute—it’s a lot less mentally exhausting than hyping it up into a masterpiece in your head right now.

If CDPR can later give Project Hadar a distinctive artistic identity and interaction experience, then someone like me—who usually just wants to relax and play for a little while—would actually be very willing to click in and take a look. Whether this new universe can truly stand on its own will have to wait until it speaks again next time.
