CDPR: No Major Witcher Expansions After Six Years, Three Games

CD Projekt RED recently confirmed that its plan to deliver a new Witcher trilogy within six years means large expansions like Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are unlikely to return. The company is fully migrating to Unreal Engine 5 to boost production efficiency, but Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski admitted this aggressive cadence makes it "nearly impossible" to produce the kind of substantial DLC that defined The Witcher 3's legacy.

That math matters. The Witcher 3 player community consistently logs well over 100 hours on a full playthrough, and Blood and Wine alone offered roughly 30–40 hours—essentially the length of a standalone indie title. By contrast, early estimates suggest each new Witcher installment could be compressed to around 40 hours. That's nearly a 60% reduction per entry. Players are realizing that content once bundled with a single $60 purchase is now being spread across three separate products, each with its own price point.

Some players frame this as a straightforward business pivot: faster sequels mean steadier revenue streams without the additional one-to-two-year investment required for major expansions. That logic holds up commercially. After the catastrophic launch of Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR faced real financial pressure, and compressing development cycles is a pragmatic survival strategy. But for the franchise's core audience, losing expansions known for narrative depth strikes at the very competitive advantage that built the series' reputation.

Unreal Engine 5 is officially positioned as the efficiency solution, but engine transitions rarely lower risk—they rebuild toolchains and workflows from the ground up, consuming significant resources upfront. CDPR is clearly betting that technical gains will translate into time savings. Whether players will pay $70 for a Witcher that delivers less remains the real question.
