The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete EditionFetching price~ 29,99€From The Last of Us to The Witcher 4 Female Lead Trend Sparks Debate
Game Rant today rounded up 6 notable cases where established series shifted from male leads to female leads, arguing that the same conversation may continue with God of War: Laufey and The Witcher 4. In the outlet's view, this kind of change has become slightly more common over roughly the last decade. Its examples include Ms. Pac-Man, The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, Dishonored, Silent Hill 3, and NieR: Automata.
What ties these cases together is that the change was not just cosmetic. In the stronger examples, the new lead altered the story's center of gravity, changed how the game played, or went on to become the public face of the series. When that fit is weak, players notice quickly. When the writing and design hold up, the discussion tends to move back to the game itself.

The Walking Dead and The Last of Us took different routes to that shift. In The Walking Dead, Lee Everett is the lead in Season 1, and his story ends with that first season. From Season 2 onward, players directly control Clementine, following her from an 8-year-old girl into a hardened survivor over a journey that spans about 10 years. The Last of Us works differently. Ellie was already the most important character in the first game, and The Last of Us Part II places her fully at the center, with combat that leans more heavily into agility and stealth.

Dishonored 2 handles it more neatly than most sequels. Corvo is not removed; instead, he and Emily serve as dual protagonists, and players choose one of them near the start to carry through the full campaign. Game Rant notes that Arkane Studios originally conceived Dishonored 2 as Emily's game, which also helps explain why her more personal connection to the main villain Delilah makes her the more natural narrative center.

Then there are Ms. Pac-Man and 2B, two cases where the female lead did not just inherit a series but came to define it. Ms. Pac-Man plays much like Pac-Man, but her cultural impact made her an icon in her own right, and she even headlined several standalone games around the turn of the century. Likewise, Drakengard and NieR Replicant from 2010 had passionate followings, but it was NieR: Automata that pushed the wider series into relative superstar status. In Game Rant's retelling, NieR: Automata had sold more than 2 million copies by 2017, and that success also helped the earlier game secure a remake. 2B became the face of NieR, overshadowing the previous two protagonists.

Taken together, the pattern does not necessarily mean female leads simply sell better. The more convincing reading is that publishers and developers have become more willing to center the character who best fits the story. Silent Hill 3 is a clear example. It is described here as a direct sequel to the original Silent Hill, and among the first 7 games, it is the only one with a female protagonist. The choice works because Heather fits the story the game wants to tell.
That is why the debate around God of War: Laufey and The Witcher 4 is unlikely to be decided by gender alone. What matters more is character writing, system fit, and whether longtime fans can still feel continuity in the new lead.
