*Red Desert* Responds to the AI Controversy: This Time It Really Wasn't a Minor Mistake
Compared with the optimization controversies commonly seen around new open-world releases in the same genre, the issue Crimson Desert has run into this time is not frame rate fluctuations, but asset-related problems that more directly affect visual perception and player trust. For a title launching simultaneously on PC, PS5, and XSX, visual assets should have been the easiest thing to compare across platforms; yet right now, players are not first comparing version differences, but whether the content sources are compliant.

First, the facts. Crimson Desert, developed by Korea’s Pearl Abyss, was released on March 20 for PC, PS5, and XSX. Some time ago, players discovered that the game contained a considerable number of art assets suspected to be AI-generated, and some of that content was also accompanied by visual issues and rough texture quality. More troublingly, reports noted that the game had previously failed to disclose and explain its use of AI-generated assets in accordance with Steam store guidelines.
The official team later issued a lengthy response, and the core message was actually quite clear: during the early stages of development, the team did indeed use experimental generative AI tools, mainly for certain 2D visual materials, with the goal of quickly exploring the overall atmosphere and style. According to the original plan, this content was supposed to be reviewed and replaced by the art and development teams before the final release; by comparison, the real problem was not “whether they tried it,” but that “the things that were supposed to be replaced ultimately were not.”

The official statement also acknowledged that, after receiving community feedback, they confirmed that some of these assets had mistakenly been left in the final version, and said they would take full responsibility for it. At the same time, the team is conducting a comprehensive review of all in-game assets to identify and remove all generative AI content, while also reexamining internal processes to determine how this oversight happened.
If you compare this with other major cross-platform titles, the sensitive point here is very obvious. Performance issues can usually be gradually fixed with patches, drivers, and graphics mode options; but questions about asset origins and disclosure damage players’ trust in the development process. PC players will first check whether the Steam page explains things clearly, while console players care more about whether the final product has gone through proper quality control. From another perspective, this also shows that the community’s tolerance for AI-generated assets is no longer as lenient as it was during the early testing stage.

Judging from public reaction, many players are not completely opposed to using AI for sketches or atmosphere testing during development; what they object to is inadequately reviewed content being allowed directly into the final release, and even more so the failure to disclose it when disclosure was warranted. In fact, the official statement essentially admitted as much: they had originally believed those assets would be fully replaced before launch, but in the end, that did not happen.
For players who have not bought the game yet, my advice is simple: if you were mainly interested in Crimson Desert for its open-world action experience, you can wait and see how the follow-up review and updates turn out; but if you are especially sensitive to artistic consistency and asset originality, then waiting until the current controversy dies down would be the safer choice. After all, among games at the same price point and of a similar scale, content completeness and transparency of information should be compared on the same chart as visual presentation. As far as this incident is concerned, Crimson Desert has at least given a direct response; but what will really determine whether its reputation recovers is how efficiently the problematic content is removed and whether the version updates are handled properly.
