Elden Ring Player Loses 553-Hour Save and Breaks Down

A PC player’s 553-hour Elden Ring save was suddenly corrupted, according to a Reddit post published on August 26, 2026. The character had reached level 501 and collected every Ash of War, every weapon, every armor set, and all of their altered versions. The corruption wiped out that progress.

Those 553 hours included far more than a typical playthrough. The player had spent at least 50 hours farming runes, defeated Malenia without summons in NG+7, and beaten the Elden Beast more than 20 times. It was an unusually complete save. After the corruption, none of that progress remained.

The player wrote that “553 hours of passion, soul, pain, and victories simply vanished.” They tried several recovery methods, including verifying the game files, manually loading a .bak backup file, and rebuilding a stable save structure. None of those attempts restored the save.

Some players suggested trying to recover the Steam Cloud save. Whether that works depends on whether cloud synchronization was working properly. If it was disabled, or if the local file had already overwritten the cloud copy, the chances of recovery would be slim.

The post drew plenty of attention, with several players saying it reminded them to back up their own saves. Local save data can disappear because of a failing drive, a problematic system update, a mod conflict, or a broken Steam Cloud sync. In a game like Elden Ring, where collection and character progression are central to the experience, the save file represents a substantial investment of the player’s time.

PC players should check three things now: whether Steam Cloud is enabled, whether the save folder is backed up manually on a regular basis, and whether any automatic synchronization setting could overwrite a usable copy. Console players should not assume they are completely safe either. PlayStation and Xbox systems have also seen save-loss incidents.

Backups are easy to overlook while everything works, but they can preserve hundreds of hours after a failure.

Souls games make repeated failure part of the experience. Save corruption offers no equivalent retry. This player’s experience is a warning to everyone: you may defeat Malenia, but an unbacked-up save can still erase hundreds of hours in an instant.
