Spirit Hotel demo is out ahead of its June 25 release, but how soothing is it?

《森灵旅社》, a cozy new Steam game about running an animal boarding lodge rather than a traditional farm sim, is part of Steam Next Fest 2026. Its free Demo is available now, and the Early Access version launches on June 25. The game supports Simplified Chinese and online co-op. It also layers in a village mystery involving a strange fog, a spreading non-natural illness, and a supposed witch's curse.

What immediately sets it apart is that the focus isn't on crops or fishing, but on caring for individual animals. A lot of cozy games sell the slow-rural-life fantasy, but 《森灵旅社》 puts its emotional center on its animal guests. That makes it feel less like a farm-chore checklist and more like learning the rhythms of a very unusual shared home. That gives the management side a more personal feel.

Details are still limited, but one promising sign is how seriously the game treats different animal needs. There are more than 20 animal guests, including kittens, piglets, crocodiles, and tigers, and they're not there just for variety. Crocodiles need pools, tigers prefer cover, and piglets need mud pits. At the very least, it suggests the developers want care to come from specific actions rather than a vague "raise affection" meter.

Just as importantly, the management side sounds grounded. Checking guests in, building habitats, feeding them, playing with them, and even cleaning up feces are all part of the routine. That may sound mundane, but it's what makes the place feel real. Looking after living creatures shouldn't be all cuteness and no friction. If it were only cute and never inconvenient, it would feel false.

The obvious risk is pacing. Games like this can lose momentum fast if "care" turns into repetitive labor. What feels fresh early on can quickly turn into repetitive busywork. Fortunately, the developer has already said the Early Access version will add convenience features such as auto-cleaning and batch feeding, which is the right call and suggests the team understands the risk.

Look, a customer has arrived! The game prompts the player to continue, likely indicating a new interaction or event has begun in the game world.

The story, though, may be the more compelling hook. A strange fog hangs over the village, and a non-natural disease is spreading. Alongside running the inn and tending crops, players will gather clues and investigate the truth behind the witch's curse. It's a strong setup: a gentle pixel-art countryside on the surface, with unease and buried secrets underneath. If the writing holds up, that contrast could give the story real weight.

If you usually enjoy the calming loops of Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing, 《森灵旅社》 looks worth a Demo download, especially if you're here more for atmosphere and animal care than pure farming. But it's also worth being clear about what it isn't. This is not a pure farming game; its core is animal boarding management. If all you want is to keep your head down and farm, it may not match that expectation. The Demo has already drawn plenty of positive feedback, and the June 25 Early Access launch should give a clearer sense of its pacing and long-term appeal.

The next thing to watch is whether the later story delivery holds up, especially the villager interactions and the main plot mystery. Cozy games rarely fail because they ask too much of you. They fail when all that activity feels empty. The bigger danger isn't having too much to do, but doing a lot and leaving nothing behind. The hope for 《森灵旅社》 is that it doesn't just leave you feeling like you raised a group of animals, but that you genuinely built a relationship with this village hidden in the fog.
