According to May 25 social media reports, Gang of Dragon has officially halted development. Toshihiro Nagoshi led the project under NetEase investment, but the publisher withdrew funding over unsustainable costs. The studio’s website now loads a dead page, and its YouTube channel has been scrubbed clean.

Foreign players quickly criticized the cancellation, arguing that Chinese investors treated a veteran director like a rookie. Nagoshi spent over a decade heading a major studio before departing because he grew tired of Like a Dragon’s rigid narrative path. The abrupt termination wastes years of groundwork. Players also noted RGG Studio’s past friction over his departure and handover roles, yet many still hope he will eventually rebuild a team around his creative vision.

The project’s design actually stood out. Its multi-threaded world-building and unconventional structure reminded players of a crossover between Overcooked and It Takes Two. Commercial backers rarely reward structural experimentation, however. Independent teams routinely choke when budgets spiral or creative control shifts. Rather than mourning sunk costs, the industry should track whether Nagoshi can find a publisher willing to fund iterative risks. Creators driving experimental projects deserve room to fail forward.

NetEase’s exit follows standard corporate logic, yet it extinguishes a rare independent spark. The overseas criticism highlights a broader issue: strong design concepts should not be buried by spreadsheets.
