On July 31, ChinaJoy opened at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre under the theme “Travel with AI.” According to Gamersky, the HarmonyOS gaming booth in Hall N3 covers more than 1,000 square metres and is built around the theme of a “cyber amusement park.” The HarmonyOS ecosystem now has more than 35000+ adapted games, while HarmonyOS terminal devices have surpassed 1.35 billion.

Players expect their game libraries and progress to survive changes in hardware and operating systems. That expectation helps explain why HarmonyOS 5’s gradual removal of the AOSP compatibility layer initially caused concern.
Building a game ecosystem without relying on Android compatibility is a serious challenge. The question is whether HarmonyOS can offer something substantial beyond changing the operating system underneath.
The current numbers provide some evidence. More than 35,000+ adapted games are already available, covering genres from Three Kingdoms Kill and Goose Goose Duck to Arena Breakout and Wuthering Waves. As of the end of last year, active gamers accounted for more than 50% of HarmonyOS players, while high-end models represented more than 73%. Those figures make a stronger case than any slogan.

The booth’s more convincing argument, however, is its range of system features built around multiplayer, file transfers, and faster launches. Tap-to-team, near-field file transfers, and memory-mirror snapshots that launch games within seconds are practical capabilities rather than decorative additions.
HarmonyOS is also pushing into AI gaming with the Xiaoyi Game Assistant and voice controls powered by a large AI model. Their effect on competitive play remains unproven, but they add another way to interact with games.
The feature most likely to reassure established players is cross-platform continuity. Honor of Kings and Teamfight Tactics support shared data with Android, as well as cross-platform matchmaking and online play. Switching systems does not mean starting over, which is the kind of respect for a player’s time that an ecosystem needs to provide.
HarmonyOS also supports seamless switching between phones, PCs, smart screens, and in-car systems. On the afternoon of August 1, the venue hosted a Peace Elite competition using HarmonyOS gaming devices. Alongside technologies such as frame interpolation, PGA game-engine acceleration, and cloud-device ray tracing, these features are designed to improve frame rates, image quality, and stability.

HarmonyOS gaming is still moving toward a fully independent ecosystem, and the transition will not be effortless. At this stage, though, its numbers, cross-platform support, AI features, and multi-device experience provide a credible answer to the doubts surrounding the move away from AOSP.
For a domestic games ecosystem built around a self-developed operating system, veteran players are not asking for louder slogans. They want the system to put the quality of the experience first. HarmonyOS gaming has not finished proving itself, but its current approach addresses several of the practical concerns around the transition.
