Helldivers 2 Creative Director Admits the Game Was Half-Finished

Arrowhead creative director Johan Pilestedt held a Reddit AMA to respond to player criticism of Helldivers 2. He admitted the complaints were reasonable, and that some systems do come across as half-finished.

This response gets a 6 out of 10. Admitting there is a problem is easy; fixing it is the hard part. The issues players raised are very specific: poor weapon balance, a progression system that feels superficial, and core mechanics that seem to have launched before they were finished. These are not problems one or two patches can solve. They require a much deeper rebuild.

The official promise is to release development progress reports every two weeks and implement major changes. Does that sound sincere? The community is not convinced. Players have brought up the old record: Arrowhead has made plenty of promises before, yet actual changes have arrived at a crawl. Whether this becomes another round of empty promises is still anyone’s guess.

Pilestedt did say one thing that sounds honest: “Only when players stop speaking up is the project truly heading toward death.” He is not wrong. The problem is that players have been shouting for months, and the studio is only starting to listen now. Online games in 2008 already understood the need for fast iteration; in 2026, this kind of slow response feels especially hard to defend.

At this point, Helldivers 2 feels like it is still in an early test version. If you are a longtime player, the safer move is to wait another half year and see whether the official promises actually turn into changes. If you are a newcomer thinking about jumping in, do not rush to buy it yet. Wait until the reputation genuinely improves. After all, in the games industry, promises are usually the cheapest thing on the table.
