HUNTER Mini Gashapon Book Is Going Viral, but Is It Worth 23 Yuan?

Bandai Gashapon released the fourth wave of its Weekly Shonen Jump Manga Tankobon Collection mini capsule books in Japan in April 2026, and one item has spread especially fast online: a miniature Volume 1 of Hunter x Hunter. Priced at 500 yen per pull, or about 23 yuan, it caught attention through Japanese users’ hands-on photos showing that this is not just a tiny cover prop, but a fully reproduced mini manga.

That distinction is the whole appeal. Many buyers initially assumed they were getting a standard cover-style charm, but the real product is far more elaborate than that. This Hunter x Hunter volume includes the complete contents of the first collected edition, including the author's note, a removable cover, and the full page layouts throughout the book. For longtime anime and manga fans, the draw is less practical reading and more the satisfaction of collecting, handling, and owning a remarkably faithful miniature.

It also is not the kind of novelty that only works in photos. Based on physical shots shared by Japanese users, this mini capsule book can actually be flipped through page by page, which is a major reason it broke out so quickly on social platforms. The craftsmanship is clearly above what some people expected, especially for a series as sentimental as Hunter x Hunter. Seeing one of Yoshihiro Togashi's early tankobon volumes compressed down to capsule-toy size gives it an immediate novelty boost.

There is an obvious limitation, though. Readable does not mean comfortable to read. Once a manga is shrunk to gashapon scale, much of the dialogue and finer detail may require a magnifying glass to make out clearly. So if someone is buying this as a 23-yuan way to revisit Hunter x Hunter Vol. 1, the actual reading experience probably will not feel nearly as convenient as using a normal manga volume. It makes more sense as a display-piece collectible than as something you would regularly read.

The broader lineup matters too. Wave 4 also includes first volumes from Assassination Classroom, Mashle: Magic and Muscles, Black Clover, Phantom Seer, and Dr. STONE, alongside six popular works in total from the same batch. That makes it clear Bandai Gashapon is building more than a one-off nostalgia item; it is building a collectible system around first volumes from Weekly Shonen Jump. The series first launched in July 2025, and by April 2026 it had already reached its fourth wave, suggesting a stable release rhythm. For capsule-toy collectors, a line like this is often more tempting as a set than as a single purchase.

The buying advice is straightforward. If you are a Hunter x Hunter fan, or already collect gashapon, miniature books, or Jump merchandise, 500 yen is an easy price point to read as strong collector value. If what you want is practical readability or a portable manga substitute, expectations should be lower. Its strengths are fidelity and conversation value, not usability. That is exactly why it is taking off: small, not outrageously expensive, and made with much more care than people expected.
