Baldur's Gate 3 hits 20 million sales as Larian preps next Steam launch
Larian Studios' publishing director Michael Douse told press on April 24 that he wants their next game to crash Steam's servers entirely. Bold claim, but the studio has earned it—Baldur's Gate 3 has moved over 2000 million copies as of December 2025, and when it launched in 2023, Steam's global bandwidth spiked from the usual 20-40 Tbps to 146 Tbps.

The upcoming title is a new Divinity game, officially confirmed in December 2025 as larger in scope than Baldur's Gate 3. As the follow-up to Divinity: Original Sin II, expect another hundred-hour hardcore RPG. That's where I get nervous—I spent 30 minutes on character creation in BG3, then bounced off the actual game because the systems felt overwhelming for a casual player.

Larian's messaging here is clever. "Crashing servers" sounds like bragging, but it's really signaling to players: this game will be so hot everyone will rush to play it. Baldur's Gate 3 proved that model works—launch day had the entire internet talking, and Steam community activity went through the roof.

What I actually care about is whether the new game will be more accessible. BG3's tactical combat plus D&D ruleset is too dense for someone who just wants to unwind during commutes. If Larian can maintain depth while lowering the entry barrier, that's when they'll truly crash servers—because casual players like me are the majority.
No release date yet, but knowing Larian, we're looking at another year or two minimum. I'll wait for the servers to stabilize before jumping in anyway.
