Joyful Forest Life Goes to Sea: Bad Ridge Games Announces "Setting Sail" Expansion for H2 2026
Joyful Forest Life's new version "Setting Sail" debuted at the Shacknews E4 Indie Game Expo, with Bad Ridge Games confirming a H2 2026 release. The expansion brings new story content, characters, and cosmetic decorations to the immersive medieval fantasy RPG—and, notably, online multiplayer with cross-save co-op support.

A farming tale rooted in soil and wheat fields is suddenly heading for open waters, and the narrative ambition behind that shift deserves scrutiny. The new version introduces seven core features: sailing, ship customization, launching adventures, recruiting sailors, finding family members, uncovering the Black Stone mystery, and online co-op. It's a pivot from "returning home" to "setting sail"—the game's text quietly transitioning from static homestead management to dynamic adventure narrative.

Joyful Forest Life's original core loop centers on farm management, cultivation, animal husbandry, crafting, and market sales. NPCs follow complete daily routines, and players can interact, build relationships, marry, and raise children. This is a "home"-centric narrative structure—the gaming equivalent of a coming-of-age story that never leaves its hometown. The addition of nautical adventure means that narrative radius expands dramatically: ships become mobile sea-based homesteads, sailors become new interactable characters, and the Black Stone mystery offers a separate narrative thread independent from the base game's story. The real question is whether the original NPC system's nuance survives the shift from land to sea.
From another angle, the simultaneous launch of multiplayer might be the flip side of that same coin. When single-player narrative can't carry a grander world, online co-op becomes the workaround. Taking what was essentially a personal pastoral story and duplicating it across multiple players—sending them out to sea together—may be a workaround for single-player narrative limitations. Whether this structural shift undercuts the game's intimate feel depends entirely on how the dev team executes it.
What's clear from available information is that Bad Ridge Games has genuine ambitions in character work. The complete NPC daily behavior system and relationship-building mechanics both exist to serve one purpose: making characters that feel real. If the nautical content integrates deeply with this system rather than merely stacking on top of it as a separate gameplay layer, the new version could genuinely represent a narrative-level upgrade. Pre-launch activities are already live — worth watching to see whether the sea content feels like an extension of the farm or an unrelated mode bolted on.
