PS5 Pro's New PSSR Debuts in Resident Evil Requiem: 1080p Upscaled to 4K at Stable 60fps, Digital Foundry Certifies 'The Real Deal'

PS5 Pro's super-resolution technology PSSR has received a major upgrade, and the first game to adopt the new version is Resident Evil Requiem, which launches today. Sony system architect Mark Cerny personally confirmed the news on the official PlayStation Blog.

The new PSSR has been completely rebuilt at the foundational level. Cerny stated that the improved version employs "a fundamentally different approach, not only in the neural network but in the overall algorithm." This upgrade stems from Sony's deep collaboration with AMD through "Project Amethyst" — the jointly developed core technology previously debuted on PC as AMD FSR 4, with the PS5 Pro version receiving an additional six months of refinement on top of that.

How does it perform? Digital Foundry called it "the real deal." In Resident Evil Requiem's ray tracing mode, the new PSSR upscales a base resolution slightly above 1080p to 4K while maintaining 60fps output. In testing, fine details such as stitching on character clothing and small text on environmental signage were clearly legible, with significantly sharper edges, delivering what was described as "genuinely high-quality 4K output."

The only minor shortcoming is some noise present in ray-traced scenes, but Digital Foundry was clear that PSSR is not to blame — the issue lies with Capcom's own denoising solution, and the same problem occurs on PC when using DLSS 4.5 or FSR 4.

According to Cerny, several existing games will receive the new PSSR upgrade in March alongside a system software update. PS5 Pro players will be able to toggle between the old and new versions in any PSSR-supported game via the "Enhanced PSSR Image Quality" switch in Settings.
