Rock Kingdom World Is Making Changes With Gender Switching and Controller Support in the Works

Rock Kingdom: World, the monster-collecting game from Tencent Magic Cube Studio, used its May 19 update notice for Season 2, Carnival Tales to confirm that two long-requested features are now in development: main character gender switching and PC controller support. According to the announcement, the game, which launched earlier this year and now has more than 10 million daily active players, is already available on PC and mobile.

The most important part of the notice is not really the new-season content. For long-term players, the bigger story is that the developers have finally addressed two persistent quality-of-life requests head-on. One is the ability to switch the protagonist's gender. The other is controller support on PC. They sound like separate issues, but both point to the same expectation: players want Rock Kingdom: World to move beyond merely being playable and become more flexible, more comfortable, and easier to live with over time.

The gender-switch discussion has been especially straightforward in the community. Some players have repeatedly argued that the male character's outfits are less appealing than the female character's, which is why they want the option to change from a male character to a female one. The key detail in this announcement is not just that the feature is being worked on, but that the official wording explicitly says the protagonist gender switch will not be paid. That directly addresses the biggest concern around the feature: turning a basic appearance adjustment into a monetized barrier. In a seasonal live-service game with more than 10 million daily active users, appearance freedom is not a fringe request. It is part of retention.

From a product standpoint, the move also makes sense. Gender switching does not create new gameplay, but it does reduce the psychological cost of an early account choice, which matters in this kind of operated game. If players know their initial decision is reversible, they are less likely to worry about investing long-term or trying a new account. For a game already spread across mobile and PC, reducing the penalty of "choosing wrong" can matter more than adding another batch of stat-driven content.

Controller support is a different issue, but no less important. Right now, the PC version only supports keyboard and mouse, with no controller support yet. In a cross-platform game, that feels incomplete. Many players see PC as the more comfortable platform for long sessions, not just a larger screen for mobile content. Once a game reaches an active audience this large, limited input support can directly affect whether some users are willing to make PC their main platform.

If you are a PC player still on the fence, the practical takeaway is simple. If controller support matters a lot to you, it makes sense to wait for a more concrete progress update before deciding whether to start or return. If you are already comfortable with keyboard and mouse, though, Season 2 looks like a fairly natural entry point. For existing players who have already put serious time into the game, the announcement at least sends a positive signal: the developers know which issues have been raised for a long time, and they are not dodging the complexity. They are treating them as long-cycle features.

What matters next is no longer whether these features will happen, but when they arrive and how complete they are at launch. The announcement is clear: these long-cycle features are already in progress, and once there is definite progress, the team will share it through official channels as soon as possible. With Season 1 nearing its end and Season 2 about to begin, improvements like these may do more for the game's second-season reputation than any loud promotional push.
