Shrek 5 Set for 2027—Can the Old Green Ogre Still Deliver?
DreamWorks Animation dropped the first trailer for Shrek 5 yesterday and confirmed that the film will open in North American theaters on June 30, 2027. It is the fifth entry in the classic Shrek animated series, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz back as Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona, while Zendaya joins the cast as Shrek’s daughter.

I’d put this at a 7. The announcement itself is no surprise; the real question is whether this comeback can still land. The last Shrek film arrived in 2010, and after a gap that long, it has to prove there’s still a reason for it to exist.
That expectation is fair, given the series’ track record. The first four films were released in 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010. Shrek 2 alone made $920 million worldwide, or about 62.28 billion yuan, and the full four-film total has passed $2.9 billion, or about 196.32 billion yuan.
That also means a fifth film carries real expectations. This was never just a nostalgia play; it’s a series that has already become a proven box office force, with spin-offs including Puss in Boots, a Broadway musical, and theme park attractions.
For now, the most reassuring sign is the returning core cast. Myers, Murphy, and Diaz are all back, which should at least keep the core dynamic intact from the start. That matters more than shiny animation or a fresh premise.
The story also sticks to familiar territory. It follows on from the earlier films’ world, with Shrek and Donkey heading to a magical city at the edge of the world for a new adventure. That fits Shrek better than some forced attempt at a grand reinvention.
Zendaya’s addition as Shrek’s daughter is the clearest new element, and it feels like the right kind of update. The key is whether the film can work that new energy in naturally, instead of making the generational handoff feel mechanical.
For longtime fans, the takeaway is simple: keep the release date in mind, but don’t rush to celebrate yet. Wait for the next trailer and more character details before deciding whether this is a solid return or just another legacy sequel trading on a famous title.
