Sony's PlayStation PC Push Could Be a Goldmine—If China Stays

Data from market research firm Alinea Insights shows a striking 42% of Death Stranding 2's Steam sales originated from China, making it the title's largest Steam market by far. Stellar Blade tells a similar story—Chinese players represent one of its primary Steam markets as well. These figures landed as Sony quietly reassessed its strategy for bringing first-party PlayStation titles to PC, a move that's ignited broad discussion.

Those figures only tell part of the story. Steam's latest hardware survey shows 39.48% of users default to English, while Simplified Chinese accounts for 21.85%—a close second place. Analysts estimate China's total Steam user base has surpassed 30 million.

PC Gamer noted that if Sony scales back its PC publishing efforts, it would be ceding a massive pool of potential customers. For single-player titles, PC access removes a barrier many players won't bother crossing. Cutting off that route means Sony risks alienating an audience that's already demonstrated significant interest.

There's also the social dimension. Data is one thing, but gaming is fundamentally social. China's Steam community is large, engaged, and growing—numbers that eclipse most Western markets.

The core question isn't whether China matters—clearly it does. The question is whether Sony recognizes that before it's too late.
