Star Trek Shadow Frontier launches in 2027 to a divided response
Star Trek: Shadow Frontier is set for 2027, and the reaction is already split for a simple reason: this is not being framed as a bright, optimistic space adventure. Bloober Team, the Polish studio behind Silent Hill 2 Remake, has formally announced the new game with Paramount Game Studios. It is a story-driven third-person psychological thriller action-adventure coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. Players will take on Ro Laren, with original actor Michelle Forbes returning for both voice work and motion capture.
The risk is obvious, too. Bloober is taking a franchise long associated with exploration, moral conflict, and big-picture questions, then steering it toward psychological horror. After Silent Hill 2 Remake, the studio clearly wants to fold pressure, trauma, and franchise storytelling into one package. Whether that works will come down to restraint, not the pitch.

The premise is stronger than it first appears. After a crash, Ro Laren, a former Bajoran Starfleet officer, is stranded on a remote planet being consumed by a mysterious consciousness. She has to survive both deadly creatures and environmental threats. Iconic gear like the tricorder and phaser grounds the exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat in familiar Star Trek tech. Bloober says the game blends exploration, puzzles, combat, and cinematic storytelling. The formula is familiar, but in Star Trek it shifts the tone dramatically.

The potential friction points are obvious. First, Star Trek has long emphasized discovery, clashes between civilizations, and value-driven decision-making, so a psychological thriller with intense violence and bloody scenes will naturally push away some longtime fans. Second, Bloober has historically been stronger at atmosphere and psychology than at action. If this is going to wear the label of a third-person action-adventure, the combat cannot feel like an afterthought.

One genuinely encouraging choice is the lead character. Ro Laren is unusually well suited for a trauma-focused story. She is not a blank-slate protagonist, and her internal conflict already has real depth. Michelle Forbes returning to voice and perform the role gives that portrayal extra weight. For players who care most about narrative, that matters more than simply adding more lore.
