Starblaze demo is out, but is 30 minutes and three straight stages enough?

Starblaze is now available on Steam with a free demo, and solo developer Black Note has confirmed the game will appear in Steam Next Fest in June. This Chinese indie original is a 2D boss-rush bullet-hell action game, and the current demo includes 3 stages, Simple and Normal difficulty options, and a full clear time of about 30 minutes. The full version is in its final stretch and is expected to launch later this year, while players can already try the demo and add it to their wishlist on Steam.

What caught my attention first was not the phrase "boss rush," but the promise of no long filler mob fights. That is the real hook. Starblaze cuts out the detours and repetitive padding, then sends players straight into a string of high-intensity boss battles. The pitch is simple: no filler, just back-to-back boss fights.

That makes the game feel focused rather than expansive. You are not roaming maps or picking through open-ended spaces. You are learning boss patterns, reading bullet gaps, and testing the limits of your dodge timing. Players take control of the wandering catgirl Aila and enter the Astral Disc to challenge 12 guardians trapped by their obsessions. Each guardian has a distinct identity and an obsession they cannot let go of. That gives the fights a throughline built around redemption, instead of leaving them as a mere gauntlet.

Its most memorable trait is the contrast between the art and the combat. Starblaze uses a 100% hand-drawn visual style with a fresh, soothing look, but the actual battles revolve around dense, high-difficulty bullet patterns and extreme dodging. One player description gets the contrast right: the art feels healing, while the combat feels punishing. That tension leaves a stronger impression than either side would on its own.

The project’s background is also worth noting. Starblaze is an original Chinese indie game built by Black Note solo over two and a half years. A solo 2D bullet-hell action game already asks one developer to balance art, readability, and combat feel; tying 12 guardians and their personal obsessions into the narrative raises the bar further. That stated goal — proving one person can make a game with both warmth and quality — matches the game’s overall tone.

Still, it is worth being blunt about what this game is not. If you want a giant map, piles of side content, and the freedom to wander aimlessly, Starblaze is not built for that. It strips away everything but the boss fights. Whether that works for you depends almost entirely on whether you enjoy boss-rush design. That said, the demo keeps the commitment low at about 30 minutes, and the inclusion of Simple and Normal modes gives both story-focused players and hardcore players a reasonable way in.

The takeaway is simple: if you like games such as Furi that lean on consecutive boss fights, or if you are interested in dense bullet-hell action, download the Steam demo first and then decide whether to wishlist it. If high-pressure dodging usually frustrates you, start with Simple mode and get a feel for the art and narrative tone instead. Based on what has been shown so far, Starblaze is not trying to impress players with map size. It knows exactly what it wants to be and stays focused on that.

Black Note has also provided an official QQ group and the Steam Community as feedback channels for players.
