On August 15, 2026, Astro Bot became the first PlayStation 5 game to boot on a Steam Deck, thanks to the experimental emulator SharpEmu, as reported by Pirat_Nation. Right now, it runs at 0.5 to 1 frame per second—just enough to display the PlayStation Studios intro animation and loading screen. Crucially, this runs natively on SteamOS, bypassing Remote Play, cloud streaming, or any remote solution entirely.

It’s nowhere near playable. But it is running. That’s the blunt assessment from SharpEmu’s developers—and it sums up PS5 emulation on handhelds today. Astro Bot leans hard on the DualSense’s haptics and adaptive triggers—features the Steam Deck can’t replicate. Smooth performance was never on the table. That it boots at all—natively, with no Remote Play or cloud streaming—is still a technical milestone.

History offers a precedent: RPCS3 spent nearly a decade crawling from single-digit framerates to near-perfect PS3 compatibility. SharpEmu may be on a similar long arc. The Steam Deck’s Zen 2 architecture is merely a testbed—meaningful progress will need the horsepower of a Steam Deck 2 or better. Some in the community have already quipped that watching Astro Bot on YouTube is faster than playing it through SharpEmu.

For now, playing PS5 exclusives on your Steam Deck remains pure fantasy. Barring an unlikely partnership between Valve and Sony, emulation won’t yield a usable experience anytime soon. Credit where it’s due: this is a clever proof-of-concept. But it’s light-years from actual playability.
