Steam Machine estimated at $600, or $499 without controller
Moore's Law Is Dead estimates the 512GB Steam Machine will land between $600-650, debunking earlier $1,000 rumors and suggesting a controller-free SKU could hit $499.

That pricing bracket makes sense. The $1,000 figure never added up—it would've undercut Valve's own value proposition against the base PS5 and equivalent DIY builds. At $600-650, the Steam Machine sits in a defensible position: pricier than the Steam Deck, yes, but this is a desktop-class device with expandability and thermal headroom the handheld can't match.

The leaker attributes the higher-than-expected cost to supply chain realities. Storage and memory prices have surged due to shortages and AI datacenter demand—some memory modules have doubled or tripled in price. Moore's Law Is Dead added $100-150 to a November 2025 bill of materials to account for these increases. This isn't Valve padding margins; the entire supply chain is more expensive now.

The $499 controller-free option is the real hook. For players already sitting on Xbox or PlayStation controllers, skipping the bundled gamepad—which retails separately for $99—offers meaningful savings and flexibility. Two spare controllers gathering dust in my drawer make that SKU an easy choice.

Moore's Law Is Dead draws a hard line: anything over $700 would be a serious misstep. The Steam Machine targets core players who know both PC and console ecosystems—they'll run the numbers. Price it wrong and you push them toward the PS5 or a self-built rig. The $600-650 range covers costs without triggering sticker shock. These figures come from industry sources, not Valve, so official pricing remains unconfirmed.
