Is *Uncharted* Really Coming Back? This Time, It Seems Like Naughty Dog Might Actually Make It Happen

Starting at 120 hours, as someone who has to scrape up even the very last hidden treasure, my first reaction upon seeing the news that Uncharted might return was a tight clench in my chest. For many PlayStation players, this series is like the golden compass of a console generation: gunfights, climbing, treasure hunting, cinematic spectacle—there has always been a distinctive flavor where Hollywood-style adventure films lock perfectly with video game level design. More importantly, since the release of Uncharted 4 in 2017, this flagship IP has gone nearly ten years without a proper mainline sequel.

This time, the source of the news comes from Insider Gaming. The core claim is that Uncharted may be making a comeback, and that Naughty Dog does indeed still have an unannounced new project in development. Looking back further, as early as 2025, Neil Druckmann mentioned that besides Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the team was also developing another game, and that his main role on that project was as producer and supervisor. That wording is quite intriguing—like a hidden side quest marker suddenly lighting up on a JRPG map. It doesn’t directly prove the answer, but it does instinctively put veteran players on alert.

In addition, social media user @AlexandreNGamR also claimed that Naughty Dog is simultaneously developing a brand-new Uncharted, and that it is being pushed forward in parallel with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. A recently posted image by series producer Shaun Escayg, featuring a cannon overlooking a coastal city, has also been taken by many players as some kind of hint. That said, the most important reminder at this stage must be made upfront: authoritative sources, including Insider Gaming, have not yet confirmed the leak itself. In other words, what we can discuss right now is possibility, not a nailed-down official announcement.

Still, judging from Sony and Naughty Dog’s release cadence, it actually wouldn’t be surprising if Uncharted were brought back. This series has been active for nearly twenty years and is itself one of the most recognizable faces of the PlayStation lineup, while the most recent new content was only a compilation release like Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection. For the platform, an IP that combines name recognition, commercial value, and a cinematic temperament is like a classic summon in Final Fantasy—it’s not something that would be left buried away for long.

What’s worth noting is that if there really is a new installment, what I care about more is not “whether it will come out,” but “who will lead it, and what kind of game it will become.” After all, the essence of Uncharted has never been just climbing walls and shooting. It lies in the density control of its linear progression, the escalating layers of environmental spectacle, and the light yet never frivolous rhythm of interaction between characters. Unfortunately, if the goal is only to quickly reboot it by cashing in on the IP’s name, and it ends up as an industrial assembly-line product with only a superficial resemblance, then that unique flavor will be completely lost.

Judging from the reaction in the player community, everyone’s emotions are actually quite aligned: excited on one hand, restrained on the other. Excited because a series that has been quiet for nearly ten years is finally stirring again; restrained because there has still been no official confirmation, and any premature celebration could end in disappointment. My view is simple: if you’re an old Uncharted fan, the best thing to do right now is not to overindulge in speculation, but to set your expectations to “moderately high” and keep waiting for further news from Sony. If it really happens, this could very well be the strongest veteran trump card in PlayStation’s next wave of narrative-driven action-adventure planning.
