Northgard - Gardariki, Clan of the Hippogriff コメント

PC
From Southern Lands, Sindri, eldest of Brok and Eitria, returns clad in fire and steel, his twin hammers echoing both legacy and defiance. A figure of both might and mastery, bringing with him the legacy of the forge and the discipline of distant Kingdoms. Thus rises the Clan of the Hippogriff.

A slow Viking RTS that trades APM duels for season-by-season survival math and four victory paths, now packing every clan and campaign into one Definitive Edition

編集部の総評

Take all six dimensions together and Northgard: Definitive Edition is a game of unusual self-knowledge: it knows what it is good at and never pretends to be good at anything else. Its 8.2 overall sits squarely in the same band as OpenCritic's 79 and Metacritic's 81 — a strategy game with sharp strengths, clear limits and a solid core, neither underrated nor due for canonisation.

One phrase, played until it sinks in

The arc of a full match

If a single line captures the experience, it is prepare, wait, live with the consequences, struck again and again. You read the season bar two or three seasons ahead, make your call, then watch it ripen — into a clean winter or a granary bleeding out and villagers down in the snow. Schooled once by the cold, the next match you come back early and turn the lesson into an edge. That humane loop — sparring with the environment inside a fixed ruleset, then compounding the experience into the next run — is something most fast RTS games simply cannot offer. You rarely rage at a loss here; you just wince at having miscounted a winter again, then itch to hit restart, and a strategy game that makes you eager to autopsy your own mistakes has a core loop that is fundamentally sound. The irreplaceable thing is precisely that it slowed the genre into a board game; Gamereactor's Catan comparison and PC Gamer's "best of the decade" line for its weather and tile systems are two ways of saying the same thing.

Who should buy, and who should walk away

Two clans clashing on the board

The buyer is easy to picture: someone who enjoys simmering strategy low and slow, who loves doing the resource math and tracing growth branches, who can stomach a long opening economy. If Banished's seasonal squeeze or Civilization VI's "replay it down another road" structure already speaks to you, this will likely sink its hooks in and keep you there for a very long time. The one to walk away is just as clear: anyone chasing a ten-minute match, hunting adrenaline through high-frequency micro and early harassment. Its most direct rival is Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, which wins on historical breadth and fast tactics — but cannot deliver the palm-sweating dread of watching winter advance one tile at a time. They are not better or worse than each other; they are not the same game. One measures who plays fastest, the other who survives longest, and knowing which question you actually want answered tells you, more than any score, whether this is the strategy game for you.

Now is the best time to start

On which version, the answer is simple: go straight to the Definitive Edition. Folding in the Cross of Vidar campaign and the Snake, Dragon and Horse clans, free for existing owners and complete for newcomers, it is the most content-rich, lowest-barrier shape the game has ever taken. The long arc of critic and Steam approval — 23 outlets at 79, fifty-thousand-plus reviews at 85 percent, two million sales, three million players — confirms how deep it dug its own plot of ground. The last month's 68 percent "Mixed" reads as the niche tempo finding its limits, not a drop in quality. This is a long-lived strategy game polished over seven years and capped in its most complete form, the kind of release that rewards patience with depth rather than dazzle. It will not please everyone, but for the players its seasonal gambit has hooked, it still has no real substitute — nothing else makes the slow dread of an approaching winter feel quite this consequential. And if you are one of them, there has never been a better moment to bring it home.
