“A mid-budget sibling escape that turns the Black Death into a light-versus-rats hook nobody else has copied”

編集部の総評

Taken as a whole, A Plague Tale: Innocence is a game that knows what it wants and mostly gets there. An 8 is the fairest summary of "perfect on story, flawed on play."

A game that defined AAA polish on an AA budget

Rewind to 2019, and it stood beside Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice as proof that an AA outfit could conjure the sheen of AAA storytelling. Neither leaned on open-world bulk; both held you with one focused tale and one unmistakable mood. Metacritic 81, OpenCritic 82, eighty-one percent of critics recommending it — those figures mark a game with a sturdy reputation, widely admired, but short of the masterpiece tier above 85. The missing breath is gameplay depth, and only that.

Looking back, the thing hardest to replace is how tightly it locks three pieces together: the subject of the Black Death, the firelight-versus-rat-sea play, and the sibling bond at its heart. Even now, few games braid theme, mechanic, and narrative into a single cord like this — that is its true talisman. Others may push sharper visuals, deeper combat, bigger worlds, but few can make you picture "the girl holding a torch, shielding her brother as she pushes through a sea of rats" and instantly know which game it is. That one-of-a-kind hook is why it is still talked about years after release.

Who should buy, and who should walk past

If you value narrative density and atmosphere, and want a complete story told in a dozen unhurried hours, it is very nearly the benchmark answer among mid-budget games. It suits players who love escort or guardian tales and do not mind featherweight combat — you are here for the story, and the mechanics are merely the vessel.

Flip it around: if you crave open-world freedom, hardcore combat depth, or heaps of grindable content, this game will feel too linear, too led by the hand. It is not a systems player's game; it bet nearly everything on narrative and mood, and forcing it will only disappoint. Think of it less as a game you master and more as a story you are walked through — a guided thing, by design, that asks you to surrender to the telling rather than to test the seams. Decide first whether you want a story to be told or a system to dig into, and you will save yourself the letdown — there is no shame in either appetite, only in bringing the wrong one to this particular table.

Pick the right version and walk the dark road through

On versions, lean toward the next-gen PS5 or Xbox Series builds or the PC release for 60 frames and steadier visuals, sidestepping the launch-era optimization debt; the Switch port is a cloud-streaming version that needs a connection and is a notch behind, not a first choice unless you must. This is a complete single work — no DLC or season pass required, one purchase is all of it, a rare bit of peace of mind in today's market. It has shortfalls, and the play wobbles late, but its strengths — those two children keeping each other alive across a sea of rats — are moving enough that you will forgive the gaps and walk the whole road with them. Few games leave you carrying a single image for years; this one leaves you the girl, the torch, and the dark pressing in at the edge of the light. For anyone who loves a story, the trip is worth it; and if it moves you, the 2022 sequel A Plague Tale: Requiem is waiting to take you further down the same road.
