“A city builder a single developer made, where people aren't a score to grow but real lives that freeze and starve — you stockpile firewood and food years ahead of the winter. Gripping early on, but the quiet late game leans on free mods to stay alive.”

編集部の総評

In 2014, Banished turned population into the thing you’re scared of losing

Banished screenshot

Banished still matters because it was one of the games that helped define this whole modern survival city-builder lane. Back in 2014, that mattered a lot. It took the usual “grow bigger, get richer” city-builder fantasy and flipped it. Your people aren’t a score. They’re not a number you pump up for fun. They age, they get sick, they freeze, and if you botch food or firewood, they die. That sounds brutal because it is. And that’s exactly why it works. The game makes winter feel like an actual threat instead of just a seasonal visual effect.

That’s also why people keep comparing it to Frostpunk. Frostpunk is louder. It’s more dramatic. It shoves you through its scenario beats. Banished is colder in a different way. It doesn’t need a villain, or a war, or a big story hook. The enemy is the climate, and the enemy is your own logistics. No money. No tech tree. No combat. No AI army coming to ruin your day. Just you, a small group of exiles, and the question of whether you can keep them alive through the next winter. If you like systems that feel like a clean, nasty math problem, this is the good stuff.

Who Banished is for, and who’s gonna bounce off it fast

My blunt take? Banished is for players who enjoy turning a half-dead little settlement into something stable through pure planning. If you like resource juggling, production chains, and making one smart decision after another, this game will click hard. If you get satisfaction from saving a town that looked doomed an hour ago, Banished delivers that feeling better than a lot of newer games. The Steam numbers back that up too: 90% positive from 37,747 reviews is a huge player endorsement, even if critics were cooler on it, with Metacritic at 73 and OpenCritic at 74.3. That split makes sense. The early and midgame are fantastic. The pressure is real. The problem is that once your colony gets self-sufficient, the vanilla game starts to coast. The tension thins out, and you’re mostly maintaining a machine that already works.

And that’s where the warning label comes in. If you want story beats, combat, or a clear win condition, Banished is probably going to feel empty. It doesn’t hold your hand, either. A wiped-out first town is basically the tutorial for most people. You’re expected to learn by failing, then checking the wiki, then trying again. That’s rough, but it’s also why the game has such a hardcore reputation. It was also almost a one-man job from Luke Hodorowicz, and that’s wild when you think about it. He built the engine and the whole thing, and the game still hit Steam sales charts in 2014. So yeah, there’s pedigree here. But if you’re not into being left alone with a tough system and a cold winter, you’ll probably hate it.

PC, vanilla first, then mods if you want the game to keep breathing

Banished screenshot

If you’re buying Banished, the answer is simple: play it on PC, start with the base game, and expect mods to carry the long tail. There’s no paid DLC to worry about here, so the real version choice is just vanilla versus community content. And honestly, vanilla is the right place to begin. You want to learn how the game thinks before you start stacking on extras. Once you’ve got that down, then yeah, go straight for the big community stuff like Colonial Charter or MegaMod. That’s where the game gets a second life, because the mods help cover the part the original game struggles with: the late-game rut.

That’s also why the rating picture looks the way it does. The audience loves it — 90% positive is nothing to shrug at — but the critic scores sit in that solid, not insane, range at MC 73 and OC 74.3. That’s basically the story of Banished in one snapshot: a brilliant survival-city-builder with a killer opening act, a softer endgame, and a mod scene that keeps it alive years later. So if you want a polished narrative ride, skip it. If you want a lean, harsh systems game where every log and loaf matters, this is still absolutely worth your time.
