Its easy-to-learn, hard-to-master physical block-slashing is the VR rhythm benchmark; a thin built-in library and paid music packs are its shortfalls.

編集部の総評

A milestone that defined an era

Place Beat Saber in the broader landscape of music games and VR, and its status is all but undisputed. In traditional non-VR rhythm games, your "performance" is limited to button presses or touchscreen inputs; through VR, Beat Saber made "playing the rhythm with your whole body" feel real for the first time — its greatest innovation in the genre, and the part others have found hardest to replicate.

An acknowledged VR benchmark

Its legendary reputation is no accident: 93 on Metacritic, an 86 "Mighty" tier on OpenCritic with a 91% recommend rate, and an Overwhelmingly Positive 95% on Steam. Those numbers point to one conclusion — it is among the titles that defined the VR era. Its success spawned a wave of imitators, but to this day, for purity of play, fineness of polish, and a thriving ecosystem, few have truly shaken its place. Years from now it will most likely still be seen as one of the most important, most representative works in VR's history. It belongs to that small club of games that do not just sell well on a platform but justify the platform's existence — the kind of title people point to when they argue that VR was worth taking seriously at all. That is a rarer and heavier distinction than any single score can capture.

Is It Right for You?

When it comes to the purchase decision, two things matter: whether you own a VR headset and what you want from the game. If you already have one, Beat Saber is one of the safest buys on the platform — whether you want pure fun, a sweaty workout, or a game to obsess over for scores and extreme maps, it delivers. It may even be the game that convinces many people to buy into VR in the first place.

What makes that recommendation so easy is how little it asks of you in return. There is no genre knowledge to bring, no long tutorial, no sprawling systems to learn — the skill comes from your own body, and the joy is immediate. Hand a headset and this game to someone who has never touched VR, and within a single song you will usually see the exact moment it clicks for them. That instant, repeatable conversion is rare, and it is why Beat Saber so often ends up being the first game anyone demos to a curious friend. It does the platform's marketing better than any advertisement could.

The joy of playing the rhythm with your whole body

Now and for years to come

But you should know its limitations too: you need a headset and some room to move; if you do not use custom songs, the limited default track list and ongoing paid music packs are a real annoyance; if you play on PlayStation, the lack of mods clearly hurts the experience; and with no story or single-player campaign at all, players who want a narrative will find it empty. Its most direct rivals, the rhythm-shooters, fold the beat into on-rails action yet never match its purity; Beat Saber's real victory is that it did not overreach — it simply took the one act of "slashing blocks to music with sabers" and perfected it. In the end you only have to ask yourself: do you want to slice a song apart with your own two hands and your whole body? If you have a headset and the thought moves you, the answer is barely a question. On a platform that is still growing and not exactly overflowing with great games, Beat Saber is a rare title you can recommend to almost anyone without hesitation — it excludes no one beyond the need for a headset, and it answers the question of how magical VR can be with an exhilarating experience you live through and never forget. That, perhaps, is the highest praise a VR game can earn.
