“If you want to drill a pure action system and don't mind dying over and over until it clicks, this is the deepest hardcore samurai action at the price — anyone after a relaxed run or story and exploration should look elsewhere.”

A Slow-Burn Action Game That Found Its People

Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition screenshot

Nioh 2 isn’t the kind of game that wins you over in the first ten minutes. It dares you to get your teeth kicked in, learn the rules, and come back swinging. That’s exactly why it still matters. Back then, it was one of those hardcore action RPGs that felt brutally specific. Today, that same specificity is the point. The combat is still the hook: Burst Counter reads, Yokai Shift turnarounds, Soul Core stealing, Stances, Ki Pulse — all of it gets braided together into a system that keeps asking more from you. If you like fighting games disguised as an action RPG, this is your lane. If you want a chill power fantasy, this is not your lane.

The reception tells the same story. OpenCritic sits at 85.3 with a 97.4% recommend rate and a Mighty tier, which is a pretty clear sign this thing didn’t just spike and vanish. It settled in. That’s how Nioh 2 built its reputation in the West: not as the loudest game in the room, but as the one action junkies keep going back to after the big open-world names have already moved on. Compared with something like Elden Ring, it’s a narrower pitch, sure, but the tradeoff is way more depth in the actual moment-to-moment fighting. Elden Ring reaches more people. Nioh 2 reaches the people who want to lab a boss, get crushed, and then make the system their own.

Who This Is For, and Who Should Back Away

The short version? Buy this if you’re the kind of player who wants to be tested. Buy it if you like hard action games, Souls-style punishment, and the feeling of finally cracking a boss after getting flattened five times in a row. Nioh 2 is built for people who enjoy learning patterns the hard way and actually get something out of repeating a fight until the whole thing clicks. That’s where the game shines. Every encounter pushes you to juggle offense, defense, stance changes, Ki management, and those Yokai tools that can swing a bad fight back in your favor. The win feels earned because the game never lets you autopilot.

But if you’re here for story first, or you want exploration to do the heavy lifting, this’ll probably bounce off you. The narrative is thin. The structure is mission-based. The maps are separate slices of Sengoku Japan, so they can start to feel repetitive, and the visual presentation doesn’t really leap past the console version in a way that changes that. That’s the catch with Nioh 2: it’s not trying to be broad, and it’s definitely not trying to be soft. It’s a specialist’s game. The right audience will sink hundreds of hours into it. The wrong audience will wonder why it’s making such a fuss over being this mean.

The Complete Edition Is the One to Get on PC

Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition screenshot

If you’re playing on PC, the answer is simple: get The Complete Edition. That’s the version that matters, because it bundles the base game with all three DLCs, and on PC it’s the only one you’re buying anyway. So you’re not picking between editions so much as deciding whether you want the full package or not. And with Nioh 2, the full package is the whole point. The main path is already around 30 hours if you’re moving at a normal pace, but that’s not where this game lives. The real value is in the hundreds of hours you can dump into builds, higher-tier runs, and all the extra systems that keep opening up once you understand the combat.

That matters even more here because this is one of those games that benefits from a stable frame rate more than most. PC eventually got DLSS 2.0, and once that’s in play, the game becomes a lot more comfortable to push toward 4K and 60fps-plus on something like an RTX 3060. That’s not just a nice bonus — for a frame-sensitive action game, it’s basically mandatory. The launch version had its share of stutter and rough edges, but the patched-up Complete Edition is the one that best fits how people actually play Nioh 2 now. So if you want the smartest version to own, this is it.
