“Easy to pick up, yet it keeps dangling new toys at you: dive for fish by day, run a sushi bar by night, two halves locked so tight nearly every chapter hands you a surprise — just know the look is retro pixel art, not a graphics showcase.”

Two Loops, One Hook

DAVE THE DIVER didn’t just land well back in 2023 — it hit like a brick. It sold over a million copies in ten days, crossed three million overall, and became a real milestone as the first Korean single-player game to pull that kind of attention. That matters, because this wasn’t hype built on trend-chasing. People latched onto a game that knew exactly what it was doing: dive the Blue Hole by day, run Bancho Sushi by night, and keep those two loops tugging on each other until you lose track of time.

That’s still the thing that makes it feel fresh today. A lot of cozy games survive by making you settle in. DAVE THE DIVER survives by keeping you slightly restless. You’re always thinking, “Do I stay down for one more fish, or do I head back before the oxygen runs out?” And that oxygen tank is doing a lot of work here — it’s your health, your timer, and your pressure point all at once. It turns every dive into a little gamble, which is why the whole thing stays sticky even when you know the rhythm.

And the game keeps changing the rhythm on you. There are more than 100 fish across six depth zones, the map and chests reshuffle every dive, and seven story chapters keep throwing in new stuff like Sea People management, a fish-spotting TV show, and photo contracts. That constant drip of novelty is why it doesn’t age like a one-note novelty act. The design earned the BAFTA Game Design award in 2024, and honestly, that makes sense. This is one of those games where the structure is the point.

Who It’s For, and Who’ll Bounce Off

If you want a game that’s relaxing without going numb, this is a great fit. It’s especially good for players who like cozy or indie games, but also want to keep getting nudged toward the next thing. DAVE THE DIVER is built for that exact kind of player: someone who likes being comforted, but also likes being baited by new systems every few minutes. It’s no accident that it sits at 96% positive on Steam across 134,000-plus reviews and launched with official localization. People clearly felt like the game met them where they were.

But if you want pure hard-action combat or deep buildcraft, this one’s probably not your lane. It’s not trying to be a razor-edged action game, and it’s not trying to be a giant systems sandbox either. Some of the mechanics are deliberately light, and late-game systems can start to stack up without always going deep enough to justify the extra clutter. A few mini-games are more like one-and-done detours than ideas you’ll care about revisiting. So yes, there’s variety — but not every system is a heavyweight.

That’s also where the Stardew Valley comparison makes sense, but only up to a point. Stardew Valley keeps people with slow, soothing repetition. DAVE THE DIVER keeps you by constantly swapping the flavor of the next task. It’s less about settling into a life, more about being yanked into another clever little idea before the last one cools off. That’s why it works for so many players — and why it won’t satisfy people chasing one single deep, specialized obsession.

Best Way to Play It Now

For most people, the base game is enough. You do not need to treat this like a versioning problem or wait for some perfect edition. The core experience is already the thing: day dives, night restaurant shifts, and a steady stream of new systems that keep it moving. If you’re jumping in fresh, start with the main game and let it carry you. It’s already a standout on PC, and the 2024 award haul — BAFTA Game Design, Steam’s Relaxing award, and its status as the first Korean game to earn a Metacritic Must Play tag — just backs up what players already figured out.

If you’re an old player coming back, though, the In the Jungle expansion is the add-on worth looking at. That’s the kind of extra content that makes sense here: not because the base game is lacking, but because it gives you a reason to dip back in if you’ve already cleared the Blue Hole dry. I wouldn’t call this a game that needs more to work. I’d call it a game that already knows its own value.

So my take is simple: play DAVE THE DIVER if you want something warm, smart, and constantly changing under your feet. Skip it if you only care about super deep combat or hyper-specialized build systems. The magic isn’t in any one mechanic being endless. It’s in how all the parts click together and keep asking for just one more run.
