It tops no single lane, but in 2024 it was the free shooter that bundled best

Settle the bill at the end and Delta Force's position is clear: it is not the best at any one thing. Warfare can't out-Battlefield Battlefield, Operations can't out-Tarkov Tarkov, and the solo campaign even cratered its own rating for a while. What it did in late 2024 that nobody else bothered to do was bundle three tempos for free and then feed the whole thing with relentless seasons until the playerbase swelled. The split critical reception backs that up — a 61 on Metacritic, a 7 from IGN, a 58 percent Steam rating. This is a solid, unremarkable game whose highs and lows are both entirely defensible.

So who should install it? If you want a free modern military shooter and you don't want to be married to one mode — big-team Warfare today, an extraction run tomorrow — it's close to the best value on the table, and it has clearly outrun Battlefield 2042, which asked for money at launch and shipped thin on content, on the specific axis of free-and-multi-mode. Flip it around, though: if you're a purist who lives for clean simulation, can't stomach operator superpowers, and has been burned by cheaters before, this almost certainly won't satisfy you. Those near-cheat abilities and the recurring hackers will steadily grind down your patience.

There's a third group worth calling out by name: mobile players. The game reads markedly better on a phone than on a PC, simply because the handset competition is so much weaker — the very things PC players dismiss as "not top-tier" become a knockout punch on mobile. If a phone is your main shooting platform, this can comfortably sit in your first tier, which is a completely different conclusion from the "solid B student" verdict PC players hand it. Same game, opposite read, entirely because the field around it changed.

The real risk isn't the gameplay — it's whether it can keep your trust

The last thing that has to be said plainly is the soft spot, and it doesn't live in the mechanics. It lives in operations and trust. A free shooter cannot escape cheaters; detection has improved season over season, but cheating remains a chronic, recurring sore. And the always-watching anti-cheat that fights it has drawn its own fire for being overly intrusive — even lingering on your machine after uninstall — which leaves a slice of the playerbase uneasy.

More sensitive still is the question of operational trust. The October 2025 move to cap extraction headcounts was read by plenty of players as a backdoor cut to the earnings of those who don't pay, and it triggered a wave of review bombing. These are the tightropes no long-running online game can avoid — the balance between squeezing revenue and keeping faith with players, and it doesn't always walk that line steadily. So my net read is a 7.0: a generously stocked shooter buffet that's well worth installing for free, but how long it earns a seat in your library will depend entirely on how it chooses to treat the people who show up. The content is there, the gunplay is there, the breadth is genuinely unmatched at the price; what's unresolved is whether the studio can keep the cheaters at bay and the goodwill intact across the seasons still to come.

Install it with clear eyes. The download costs nothing and the breadth is real, so the downside of trying it is close to zero. Just don't expect a forever home — expect a generous, slightly anonymous shooter that's yours to enjoy exactly as long as it keeps earning the benefit of the doubt. Take what it offers freely, stay for whichever mode hooks you, and don't be surprised if a season or two from now the very same scorecard ends up reading a little differently in either direction.
