“A complete edition merging two parallel campaigns into deep turn-based team building and rich collection loops, held back only by dated visuals and a sticky pace.”

編集部の総評

If you have to ask whether this game is worth seventy or eighty hours, the answer is: it depends on what you want to take from it.

Not the cutting-edge JRPG some will hope for

Want a modern JRPG with leading presentation, razor-sharp pacing, and a plot that runs high-energy from start to finish? It is not fierce enough for that. Its visuals carry an obvious generational foundation, the text volume is heavy, the delivery skews visual-novel, and there is a slight mismatch between the detective label and where the play actually centers. Anyone drawn in by those headline expectations may realize in the early-to-mid stretch that this is not the game they pictured. It does not chase spectacle, and it will not win you over in the first hour through sheer audiovisual force. The opening hours are, frankly, the game at its least convincing: the systems have not yet bared their hooks, the writing is busy laying setup, and the presentation is doing nothing to disguise its age. A player demo-ing the first evening and expecting fireworks will likely walk away unconvinced. The work asks for a leap of faith that the loop will pay off, and not everyone is in the mood to extend that faith to a five-year-old port wearing a genre label it only half honors.

Where it earns its place

But if what you want is a different satisfaction, a stable, solid, continuously rewarding raising loop, it becomes genuinely competitive. Packing two titles together delivers more than simple bulk; it delivers enough room to slowly sink in. The interplay between turn-based combat and Digimon raising lets it stand firm among its peer monster-collecting RPGs. Against Pokemon, its team building and long-haul raising have more bite; against a flagship character-drama JRPG, it plainly loses ground on theatrical staging and narrative packaging. Different directions, different strengths. With roughly 90 percent positive Steam reception across more than ten thousand reviews, the player base clearly knows what it is buying. That is not the score of a game that surprises strangers; it is the score of a game that satisfies the people who already wanted it. The strengths are durable rather than flashy, which is precisely why they read better in hour forty than in hour one. The longer you stay, the more the team-building depth, the evolution branches, and the sheer volume of creatures justify the time, and the more the early reservations fade into the background of a loop you have stopped questioning.

The verdict for the right player

Viewed today, this is a complete-edition JRPG with very real virtues and very old-school faults. It is not the kind of work that stuns everyone on contact, but it very easily grows stickier the more the right player digs in. On the question of whether it is a must-buy at full price, I would land on a cautious recommendation. If you already happen to enjoy all three of Digimon, collection-raising, and long-form JRPGs, the dozens of hours it takes from you will basically never feel like a loss. Approach it on its own terms, give it the time it asks for, and the loop does the rest. It rewards commitment over impulse, and for the audience it was built for, that trade is an easy one to make. The clean way to decide is to check yourself against three boxes: affection for Digimon, appetite for collection-raising, and tolerance for a long-form JRPG. Tick all three and the cautious recommendation becomes an enthusiastic one, because everything this complete edition does well is aimed squarely at you. Tick only one, and you should temper expectations accordingly. The game is unusually honest about who it serves, and the smartest purchase is the one that takes that honesty at its word rather than hoping to be the exception.
