“Modern chart presentation meets a rock-solid judgment system, while a vast catalog and multi-key modes reward serious, long-term practice over casual dabbling.”

編集部の総評

Judge it on any single axis and DJMAX Respect V slides easily into a label: a textbook high-quality key-based rhythm game. The music is solid, the judgment excellent, the visuals lavish, the content abundant, with the weaknesses concentrated in a thin story and a sense of barrier for newcomers. But stretch the timeline out and you realize this kind of game is really only being asked one question — is it worth handing a big block of your spare time to.

A Favorable Exchange Rate

On the exchange rate of "time for a sense of achievement," its showing is genuinely worth it. The judgment feel and multi-key design let you truly feel "I got stronger" every time you climb a tier. The high-quality catalog guarantees you won't be tortured by bad songs during practice. The various challenge modes and versus play keep handing you new micro-goals — land a certain grade, beat a certain ID, unlock a certain rank. Compared with the many works where clearing the campaign means graduation, this is a companionship closer to daily instrument practice.

That daily-practice framing is the heart of why it lands. You don't conquer DJMAX Respect V and put it down; you keep it nearby, the way you'd keep an instrument you've decided to get good at, and it rewards the return visit every time. The progress is legible in a way that few games manage: a number you couldn't beat last month falls this month, a chart that felt like noise resolves into something your hands simply know, and each of those moments is unmistakably yours rather than a gift from a difficulty curve. That legibility is what converts time into satisfaction so efficiently here. You always know exactly how far you've come and exactly what the next rung is, and that clarity is a quietly addictive thing to live inside of.

Who It Isn't For

It isn't for everyone, of course. If you only occasionally want to bang out two songs to blow off steam, with no strong preference in musical style, the game's depth and content volume will feel like over-equipment. The thin story also means you won't walk away with the kind of memory that a narrative lands on you. Those are real limits, not nitpicks, and they decide whether this is a purchase or a pass before the first chart even loads. The entry barrier compounds the issue for the curious-but-casual: the wall of modes and key counts that a dedicated player reads as a banquet can read, to someone just dipping a toe in, as an intimidating sprawl with no obvious starting point. There's no gentle on-ramp holding your hand toward the content that fits you, so the first hour can feel less like a warm welcome and more like being handed a thick manual. Players who need a game to meet them halfway should know that going in, because DJMAX largely expects you to come to it. It assumes a willingness to invest before it starts giving back, and it makes no apology for that posture.

Where It Stands

Set it beside Beatmania IIDX and its arcade-cabinet standard, and it loses the ritual of the machine while using friendlier judgment and a modernized UI to close the distance. Set it beside Cytus II and it has no complete narrative skeleton, yet it stands firm on more traditional, solid key-based play. Both routes have their travelers, and on its own road DJMAX Respect V earns the description "worth a long-term investment." It doesn't try to out-hardcore the arcade veterans or out-narrate the story-driven crowd; instead it occupies the comfortable, hard-won middle, approachable on the way in and deep enough to never run dry. That position is easy to undersell and difficult to actually build, and it's the reason the game has stayed a fixture on PC rather than a passing curiosity.

If you're already prepared to spend dozens, even hundreds of hours "practicing" with a game, this is the electronic piano sitting on your desk — always there, always ready, asking only that you keep showing up. Want to seriously train on a key-based rhythm game? Pick this one.
