If you love grand strategy and ancient history and enjoy building long-term plans, do not miss it, but reserve dozens of hours to learn.

編集部の総評

This is an extremely honest piece of work. It does not lure you in with dazzling effects, and it does not serve up a pre-chewed linear plot for you to follow along. It simply spreads the entire classical world open in front of you and says: here is the time, how do you want to use it? That question is the whole game, and your answer is the whole experience.

A Machine For Making History

If you are willing to give it dozens of hours, what it returns is a rare sense of historical hands-on feel — the feeling that you really are haggling with the Senate, weighing border security against fiscal strain, deciding which family to elevate and which to leave out in the cold. Compared with Europa Universalis IV and the character-driven politics of its peers, Imperator: Rome plays more like an integrated machine: the scope of grand strategy, layered with the flavor of character politics, all compressed into the classical era, a stretch of time that games have historically left relatively under-explored.

The result is a package of extremely high system density and a staggering amount of content, which also places a higher demand on the player's time and learning curve than most. You will not "finish" it across one or two evenings. You will only accumulate, across different playthroughs, a string of your own little histories: the run where Rome achieved an unrealistic unification, the run where a small nation endured a century in the gap between giants, the time a single wrong governance choice brought a whole empire crashing down.

Is It Worth The Hours

The critical reception lands squarely in the solid range across outlets, and that consensus matches the experience: this is a strong, demanding strategy title rather than a flawless one. So is it worth tens or even hundreds of hours? If you love grand strategy, have an interest in classical history, or simply enjoy the slow build of a long-term plan and watching it pay off piece by piece, those hours have a way of slipping out of your hands almost without your noticing.

If, on the other hand, you only want a bit of instant stimulation in scattered pockets of time, this ancient history simulator will feel heavy and slow. Its rhythm is not suited to a quick taste. It works better as a stretch of background to a phase of your life — the kind of long historical serial you find yourself opening for a couple of minutes every evening after work, until a couple of minutes has quietly become an hour.

In one line: it is a game that honors the time you put in, and is unafraid to charge you for it. That trade is the whole proposition, and whether it is a good one depends entirely on what you are willing to spend. For the right player, it is one of the most rewarding long-haul toys the genre has produced.
