“A build-it-yourself sandbox that hides real, solvable orbital mechanics behind a cast of grinning green astronauts you fly to space and back”

編集部の総評

Put every dimension together and Kerbal Space Program is a landmark whose flaws never come close to sinking it. It is not top-tier on visuals, audio or story — but on the strength of a single unscalable mountain of gameplay, it sits comfortably in the conversation about the greatest simulations ever made. An 8.5 overall is the fair verdict on a game still unmatched in its own lane.

A place in history both press and players agree on

A Kerbal craft reaching orbit above the planet

The numbers do not lie. Metacritic gives the PC version an 88, OpenCritic's Top Critic average sits at 81 with a 'Strong' rating, and 95 percent of more than 115,000 Steam reviews are positive, the tag permanently reading 'Overwhelmingly Positive'. Press and players reach a rare consensus here — PC Gamer's 96 calling it 'a perfect blend of science and slapstick', IGN's 9 praising how it makes 'fun out of failure', Edge naming it its PC Game of the Year. On the shelf it took the Golden Joystick for Best Indie Game, the GDC Audience Award, and Unity's Best Gameplay and Community Choice awards.

For an indie with no big-publisher muscle, ground out in early access by a small studio, that across-the-board acclaim is close to a miracle. It proves a single point: if the core loop runs deep enough, shortfalls in visuals and narrative can be entirely forgiven. Rarer still, the reputation has not faded with age. Plenty of the era's high scorers now show their limits, while Kerbal's standing only firms up — because it bet on the parts least likely to date, real physics and free-form building. Ten years on, neither the critical praise nor the player passion has ebbed, and that longevity is itself the strongest proof of its worth.

Who should buy it, and who should walk away

Who should buy it first. If you are the sort who wants to truly grasp how a rocket flies, who will trial-and-error your way to a clean orbit, who feels a jolt of excitement rather than a headache at a column of engineering data, Kerbal was built for you. It hands you a satisfaction nothing else offers — the solid, slightly smug pride of 'I worked this out and flew it myself'. Anyone who loves building, loves puzzles, carries a romantic streak about real space exploration will struggle not to fall for it.

Now who should steer clear. If what you want is instant gratification, if reading data and budgeting delta-v sounds like a chore, if repeated failure makes you want to hurl the controller, this game will likely show you the door inside three hours. It also has next to no conventional narrative, so anyone hungry for story and cutscenes will find it hollow. And a warning worth repeating: the console version is clearly the lesser one, the controls and UI fighting you on a gamepad with no mod support to fall back on — so wherever you can, choose PC. As for editions, master the base game first; it is already exhaustively complete, the two DLCs are advanced extras rather than essentials, and you can fill them in once you have genuinely fallen for the thing.

Why the original is still irreplaceable, sequel and all

The launch site on Kerbin under a setting sun

The most telling thing about Kerbal is that it is still irreplaceable here in 2026. Its own anointed successor, KSP 2, met a shuttered studio after early access, went without a meaningful update for ages, and got review-bombed into 'Overwhelmingly Negative'. The heir that was meant to take over fell apart — and in doing so made this 2015 sandbox look even more like bedrock.

The thing it is hardest to copy lives in one simple but brutally difficult design choice: it turned real, solvable orbital mechanics into something a player can feel by instinct, rather than burying the physics behind a cutscene. You are not watching a rocket rise; you are deciding the thrust, the staging, the timing of the burn, and every success is one you earned. Wrap that in the comic shell of the green Kerbals and a fundamentally nerdy, hard-engineering game suddenly reaches a startlingly wide audience.

That is exactly why NASA, ESA and SpaceX have publicly name-checked it again and again, why a classroom edition, KerbalEdu, exists at all — it became a rare bridge between video games and genuine spaceflight education. A game that lets you learn, while playing, how to put a person into space and bring them safely home: that depth of edutainment remains, to this day, uncopied. That is the seat Kerbal Space Program holds in the history of the medium.
