God of War Project Shelved, Bloodborne Remake Rejected: Bluepoint's Final Struggle Before Shutdown

There's a kind of dread that comes from watching the exit draw closer, only to find the door is locked.

Bluepoint's final two years felt exactly like that.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has lifted the lid on this chapter of history in his latest report. More than a year ago, Sony announced it had cancelled two live-service game projects, one of which was a God of War multiplayer game in development at Bluepoint. Now we know more of the details.

The game was set in the Greek Underworld, with players controlling different forms of Atreus as he traversed it — featuring cooperative and support mechanics. It sounds intriguing on paper — but according to the report, the project's design "kept changing," leaving the team struggling to make headway.

What's more unsettling is that Bluepoint had never made a live-service game before. Schreier cites internal voices: "Some employees complained that they should have been making traditional action games like Demon's Souls or God of War: Ragnarök, rather than a live-service project that many clearly had no interest in building."

After being acquired by Sony, Bluepoint had harbored real ambitions — not to be a support studio, not to stop at remakes, but to develop a true original of their own. Yet even with help from Santa Monica Studio, the God of War multiplayer project never truly got off the ground, and was ultimately cancelled.

What followed the cancellation was an even longer stretch of darkness.

Bluepoint pitched a Bloodborne remake — rejected by FromSoftware. They pitched another version of Shadow of the Colossus — rejected by Sony. One last attempt, a Ghost of Tsushima spinoff — still couldn't get approval. By the time they took stock, the studio had fallen into a full year with no active project.

You all know how it ended: Bluepoint was shut down.

But what's truly chilling isn't the outcome itself — it's the journey. Every effort hit a wall. Every pitch died in approval. The studio that had proven its worth with the Demon's Souls remake and its work on God of War: Ragnarök simply ran out of time through rejection after rejection — until there was nothing left.
