Honkai Impact 3rd Bunny Girl Responds to Cold Expression Backlash, Persona or Interaction?

Tu Niang, a well-known cosplayer, said on Weibo that she had been accused of acting cold toward fans at an offline event. She explained that she had kept her interactions restrained to stay faithful to Bronya’s aloof persona in Honkai Impact 3rd. She said that restraint backfired.

Tu Niang also said she has often been criticized for going OOC, or out of character, at events. As one example, she recalled cosplaying Killjoy from VALORANT, when someone argued that the character would, in theory, never hold hands with a man. Because of that criticism, she said she toned down both her movements and her emotional responses this time.

Bronya is a classic sanwu moe character: aloof, emotionally restrained, and sparing with her reactions. Tu Niang followed that direction in her performance, which was, in its own way, respectful of the character. But fans at an event are often looking for more than a faithful pose. They also want an exchange they will remember. That leaves fans with fewer visible cues, making eye contact, distance, and response time feel more significant.

The post also included an animated GIF from the event and a set of earlier photos. The disagreement is not really about whether Tu Niang understood the character. It is about what happens when a performance built on accuracy meets the expectations of a live crowd.

This is hard to reduce to a simple right-or-wrong judgment. For cosplayers, character setting is the skeleton of the performance. Fans, meanwhile, judge the encounter by how responsive it feels. At future events where she plays similarly aloof characters, keeping the expression and body language in character while adding clearer eye contact, gestures, or a brief response may offer a better balance. It keeps the role intact without making the interaction feel dismissive.
