How to Choose *Crimson Desert* on PS5? The Standard Edition at 60 FPS Really Isn’t Worth It

What’s most worth discussing this time is not simply that the “Pro is stronger,” but that Crimson Desert’s mode trade-offs on PS5 have already clearly exposed a very typical console-side performance allocation logic: the standard version wants to push for 60fps, but the resource budget wasn’t kept under control, and the end result is a solution that looks good on paper with its target number, while the actual visual experience takes the hit.

This time, Digital Foundry focused on comparing the base PS5 and the PS5 Pro, and the conclusion is actually very clear: on the standard PS5, Quality Mode and Balanced Mode are both still playable, while Performance Mode is ironically the least recommended of the three. The reason isn’t complicated. In Performance Mode, both consoles render internally at 1080p, but the base PS5 is basically just outputting native 1080p directly, with no additional upscaling or reconstruction; the PS5 Pro, on the other hand, can use the upgraded PSSR to reconstruct 1080p up to 4K, along with some higher graphics settings, so the final image quality is naturally not even in the same league.

From a design perspective, this is a case of “the mode may share the same Performance Mode label, but the underlying implementation is effectively not the same product at all.” On the standard PS5, 60FPS feels more like a target written into the requirements document than a final delivery locked in at release. Digital Foundry’s testing shows that it fluctuates between the low 30s and 60fps, and frame-time stability is far from what you’d call professional-grade. For action gameplay, this kind of fluctuation affects responsiveness more than a simple 30fps cap, because players have a much harder time building a stable expectation for input timing.

Another detail worth flagging is 120Hz output, because a lot of players could easily get tripped up by it. Crimson Desert on PS5 supports 120Hz output by default, so as long as you enable 120Hz at the system level, the game will forcibly use the 120Hz output path. The problem is that not every TV supports full 4K 120Hz; some will fall back to 1440p, and some can only do 1080p 120Hz. Balanced Mode has a native resolution of 1296p and then uses FSR 3 to scale up to 4K. If your display can’t handle full 4K 120Hz, it will first drop the resolution and then upscale from there, leaving the final image looking blurry. At a glance, this is a textbook case of display-side compatibility costs being pushed onto the player to deal with.

Technically speaking, this doesn’t mean the game’s visuals have “suddenly gotten worse,” but rather that the output strategy and the display’s capabilities are not properly aligned. The most practical advice is actually very simple: if your TV does not support full 4K 120Hz, just turn off the 120Hz option in the system settings and don’t let the console switch output modes indiscriminately.

If you’re using a standard PS5, my buying and gameplay recommendation is straightforward: prioritize Balanced Mode, with Quality Mode as the second choice. The former strikes a relatively textbook compromise between image clarity and smoothness, while the latter suits players who can accept 30 to 40fps. As for Performance Mode, unless you care a lot about that “60fps” label in the menu, it’s a classic case of specs that look good while the actual experience feels half-hearted.

From a business logic standpoint, this review is also quite revealing: the value of the PS5 Pro is increasingly being demonstrated through reconstruction technologies like PSSR and higher graphics presets, rather than simply a few extra TFLOPS. For a visually demanding title like Crimson Desert, the Pro version really does feel more like the complete package; the standard PS5, by contrast, requires players to actively understand the settings in order to avoid mode traps that clearly bear the marks of a rushed development cycle. Digital Foundry will be doing more in-depth testing later, but at least at this stage, that conclusion is already very clear.
