Has the PC version of *Death Stranding 2* reached a 90 score—does it deserve another look?
Whether a sequel can truly establish a strong reputation usually depends not just on its launch buzz, but more on how its scores trend after going multiplatform. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has recently sent a fairly clear signal: its PC version’s Metacritic score has risen from 89 to 90, officially entering the 90-point range, while the earlier-released PS5 version still sits at 89.

In factual terms, this change is not complicated. Kojima Productions has already posted a message celebrating the PC version’s score increase. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is developed by Kojima Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and it remains an action-adventure game. The PS5 version launched on June 26, 2025, while the PC version was released on March 19, 2026. As a sequel to Death Stranding, it continues the previous game’s narrative, following Sam and his companions as they embark on a new journey to save humanity from the brink of extinction.

Objectively speaking, the difference between 89 and 90 is only 1 point, but within the media review system, the perception is not the same. A 90 feels more like a dividing line for a product, meaning it moves from being a “highly rated work” into the more solid “major game of the year contender” discussion range. For an action-adventure game that emphasizes auteur-style expression and has a relatively distinctive pacing, this bump itself shows that the PC version still maintains strong recognition across a broader media sample.
That said, the PC version surpassing the PS5 version does not necessarily mean there is a decisive gap between the two. A more reasonable interpretation is that the game’s overall quality has already been validated by the market, and the PC release has further reinforced outside opinion of this sequel. It is more like a second-generation product completing its channel expansion and having its reputation model confirmed once again—the change is small, but the signal is stronger.

From a design perspective, the core reason Death Stranding 2: On the Beach can maintain this score is that it has not strayed from its own lane. It is not the kind of blockbuster that aims to please everyone; instead, it continues to push forward along the narrative and gameplay framework established by its predecessor. For works like this, strengths and barriers often coexist, so the meaning of a 90 is not “suitable for everyone,” but rather “highly accomplished within its own genre positioning.”
If I were to give buying advice, my judgment would be straightforward: players who liked the previous game and can accept slow-paced progression and strong narrative expression can put it high on their priority list; if you have always felt indifferent toward the original game’s delivery loop and auteur-style presentation, then even this 1-point score increase may not change your expectations for the experience. The score bump is more like a certification of quality, not a taste converter.

So, what is truly worth paying attention to in this news is not just that the PC version of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has reached 90, but that it proves this sequel was not re-evaluated downward after its PS5 debut simply because of the time gap and platform shift. For a sequel, that is more valuable as a reference than merely hitting a higher score once.
