HAEX gets a new trailer, but can its 4-player survival hook work?

At 5 a.m. today during Summer Game Fest, HAEX officially unveiled new gameplay footage and a fresh trailer. GameSky notes that the related video is currently under review. Even so, the basic setup already makes clear what the game is going for: not just monster fighting, but a survival mystery built around a vanished expedition in an alien-corrupted wilderness.

The premise is the strongest thing HAEX has going for it so far. In a northern subarctic region, abnormal phenomena have appeared, and the scientific team sent to investigate has gone completely missing. Players are sent into that same wilderness, now overtaken by alien corruption, to survive and find out what happened. That gives it a stronger hook than a straightforward shooter, because the momentum comes from both survival pressure and the missing-team mystery.

The four features highlighted so far sketch out the core loop pretty clearly: dispel the fog, reshape the world, craft weapons and gear, and rely on combat to uncover the truth. Together, they point to the game's overall structure. The fog seems designed to gate off areas and create pressure through uncertainty. World modification suggests players may be able to rework parts of the environment rather than simply move through fixed spaces. Crafting looks set to drive progression, while combat is where route planning and resource management either pay off or fall apart. If those systems connect cleanly instead of operating in isolation, HAEX could deliver the satisfying progression a good survival game needs, opening up as you push deeper.

Co-op is the other big detail here. HAEX supports solo play, but also lets you team up with up to 3 friends. That sets up two very different ways to play. Solo play should lean harder on tension, resource management, and piecing information together. In a four-player group, the pace is more likely to revolve around splitting roles, scouting routes, sharing complementary equipment, and handling encounters together. A lot of co-op survival games struggle here: solo can feel punishing, while multiplayer can flatten the tension. How well HAEX balances those two modes will say a lot about how far it can go.

If that loop of unlocking new areas, gathering materials, crafting gear, and pushing into riskier zones appeals to you, HAEX is worth watching. Right now, the concept is not the issue. What needs proving is the gameplay detail: how the fog is actually cleared, how far world modification really goes, and whether combat leans toward hardcore survival or a more direct power fantasy. With the video still under review, all that can really be confirmed for now is that the direction looks promising. Whether it holds up will depend on later footage showing how those systems actually fit together.
