*Substance Existence* preload is now live! This time, 34GB really does save time
When I finally have time to turn on my console on a Saturday afternoon, what I dread most isn’t a high difficulty level, but having to spend ages downloading before I can even start playing. Preload for Pragmata is now live, and for someone like me, who usually can only scroll through messages on the subway and only gets to pick up a controller on weekends, that’s actually pretty important news. At least I won’t have to wait until the moment I want to play, only to find the download bar dragging on as endlessly as weekend overtime.

Let’s start with the most practical detail: the Steam version’s preload size is 34.29GB. By today’s AAA standards, that really isn’t excessive. Plenty of games in the same category easily run up to 70 or 80GB, making both storage pressure and download time feel more like an overpriced takeout order. The fact that Pragmata keeps its size down to this level at least shows that Capcom still knows a thing or two about engine optimization and resource compression.

The unlock times are also worth noting so you don’t end up waiting for nothing. In mainland China, the Steam version will officially unlock at 12:00 Beijing Time on April 17, while the PS5 and Xbox versions are expected to go live in the early hours of April 17. For people who work regular jobs, console players are more like the kind who set the rice cooker the night before and can eat as soon as they get home the next day; Steam players, on the other hand, are better off checking the news around noon and properly diving in after work that evening.
That said, while the preload announcement itself may not be huge news, the signal it sends is pretty clear. As one of Capcom’s sci-fi AAA titles, Pragmata is finally about to meet players this week, instead of remaining stuck in that stage of “I know this game exists, but it still feels far away.” For those still on the fence, at least now you can get the files downloaded first and lower the trial-and-error cost a little.

From a value-for-money perspective, I’d treat this 34GB preload as a plus, but not a deciding factor. What it saves is download time, storage space, and a bit of waiting anxiety, which is genuinely useful, especially for players with average internet speeds or tight SSD space. But whether the game is ultimately worth it still depends on the post-launch reception, campaign length, and gameplay density after it officially unlocks. After all, what I fear most isn’t a large file size, but finishing the download only to find that the first hour is nothing but tutorials, like being suddenly dragged into a meeting on your day off.
If you were already planning to buy it at launch, then enabling preload now is definitely worth it—any time saved is time saved, and at least your weekend won’t be spent staring at an installation screen first. If you’re purely in wait-and-see mode, I’d suggest just remembering the unlock time and deciding after the first wave of player feedback comes in. Put simply, if your time is limited, it’s fine to get the download ready in advance—but when it comes to real money and a full weekend, it’s still more cost-effective to save them for something that’s a surer source of fun.
