Linux softmod test shows GTA 5 running at 60fps on PS5
According to theverge, developer Andy Nguyen published a GitHub guide this week for running Linux on PlayStation 5, and demonstrated Grand Theft Auto V and Marvel’s Spider-Man running in that environment on older disc-model consoles with 3.xx and 4.xx firmware.
The key point is no longer whether Linux can be installed, but what it can do after installation. In the demo, Grand Theft Auto V runs on PS5 with enhanced ray tracing at 60 fps, while Marvel’s Spider-Man reaches 1440p at 60 fps. That puts this method beyond a pure technical showcase and into genuinely playable territory. For players interested in pushing platform limits, that shift matters more than specs alone. It is like finding a hidden door in a puzzle game and realizing a path once thought closed was always there.

But an open door does not mean a smooth road. The official note is clear: this is a “soft jailbreak,” which does not persist after shutdown or reboot and must be reloaded every time. In practice, that makes it closer to a temporary stage than a permanent save. On top of that, it only works on older firmware and disc-edition hardware, so the entry barrier is already high; for average users following the guide, both success rate and maintenance cost remain unpromising.

From a usability perspective, the Linux environment supports custom VRAM allocation and fan control, which is attractive for users who tune performance. It also shows its unfinished state: after first boot, you may need to manually restart the wireless network module to get online. Display output supports 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, but all are currently limited to 60Hz. Support for 120Hz or 30Hz may come later. Right now, it feels more like an engineering prototype than a secondary system ready for long-term daily use.

If you ask whether this is worth following, the recommendation is straightforward and tiered. If this is your primary console, do not stop system updates for this; stability and account security come first. If you own an older disc-model unit on old firmware and already have Linux experience, this can be treated as a platform-level puzzle to explore gradually. The developer is also researching a “hibernate boot” feature; if Linux can later be restored quickly from standby, and refresh-rate support becomes more complete, this path can move from merely “it runs” to actually “it’s usable.”
