Japanese Crowdfunding Platform Ubgoe Withholds $69K, Faces Criminal Investigation

Crowdfunding platform collapses aren't exactly rare in gaming, but Ubgoe's handling of ENDLESS SUMMER Studio's funds crosses a line. The studio launched Purgatory: Blue on the platform in July 2025, wrapping up in September with 485 backers contributing roughly $69,000 (470,000 RMB)—156% of the target. Payment was scheduled for November 2025. Five months past that deadline, CEO Kazuo Okada still hasn't released the funds.

Ubgoe launched in January 2021 pitching a zero-fee system, which naturally appealed to indie developers. In hindsight, skipping transaction fees might've been cover for withholding principal entirely. Purgatory: Blue isn't the only victim—developer Jiro Ishii's Shibuya Scramble Stories raised 54 million yen, and Ubgoe's withheld over half of it. Ishii's probably kicking himself for choosing this platform.

The timeline shows a clear pattern of stalling. Ubgoe promised payment on December 15, 2025—nothing. Another promise on December 26—still nothing. By February 2026, after yet another broken commitment, ENDLESS SUMMER Studio hired a lawyer and filed criminal charges with Shibuya Police Station. Investigators have opened an inquiry into Okada's bank accounts. On the evening of April 15, Ubgoe's website went down and remains inaccessible as of this writing.

This case is a wake-up call for indie developers. Platform vetting and fund escrow mechanisms need serious improvement, or "zero fees" just becomes bait for a trap. At least cittan, the lead developer behind Purgatory: Blue, has committed to continuing development using personal funds and alternative fundraising—some accountability to backers. Whether that $69K gets recovered depends on the police investigation. Right now, Ubgoe looks finished, and other projects hosted there are probably in the same boat.
