Star Fox Remake Is Here After 30 Years, Does It Still Rule the Series?

Nintendo used a Star Fox-themed Direct today to unveil a new game simply titled Star Fox, confirming it as a full remake for Switch 2. Soon after, IGN published a comparison video showing roughly 30 years of the series’ evolution, and that quickly pushed the game into the center of community discussion.

What lands first is the sense that an old favorite is finally back. For a lot of players, Star Fox is more than a name; it is a piece of flying-game memory sealed inside the N64 era. Nintendo also made one crucial call here: this is a full remake built on the classic N64 stage design. That matters, because it suggests the series’ core structure has not been casually thrown out.

The characters are where returning series often get tested hardest. A comeback can preserve recognizable faces while losing the relationships that made them stick in the first place. That is why IGN’s comparison video drew so much attention: players could immediately see the marks left by time, but also Nintendo’s effort to restore that history rather than overwrite it. The feeling is close to meeting an old friend after years apart; the look has changed, but the expression is still familiar, and that makes it easier to reconnect.

The new additions are also more ambitious than expected. 4v4 online battles, a two-player co-op mode, and mouse control support all suggest this is not just nostalgia with a fresh coat of paint. Nintendo is trying to place Star Fox’s flight-shooting formula back into modern play habits. The co-op mode stands out most to me, because it naturally has more room to highlight how these characters work together. At its best, that kind of design makes the experience feel shared rather than split into two parallel solo runs.

The concern is the balance implied by the phrase “full remake.” Basing the game on classic N64 level design is a safe foundation, but if the new material stops at extra modes and does not also push forward character expression, mission presentation, and interaction details, the result could be easy to enjoy without becoming truly memorable. For a series with this much emotional history, players are not only asking for sharper visuals; they also want to feel real chemistry between the cast.

From a buying perspective, this already looks easy to put on the watchlist if you have any history with Star Fox, or if you want a Switch 2 game that can cover both solo nostalgia and multiplayer fun. On the other hand, if what you want is a huge, entirely new open-ended release, it makes more sense to wait for later showcases and see how much of the package is remake content versus new modes. The biggest risk for a classic revival is not age. It is returning with only recognition, and no fresh reason to care again.

The community’s excitement makes perfect sense, because Nintendo’s message this time is unusually clear: this is not a simple port, and not a vague new project, but a remake that is directly named Star Fox. What decides its reputation from here will be simple: can it make longtime fans feel that reunion, while giving new players something they can connect with too? Flying faster will not be enough on its own. What matters more is whether, after 30 years, these characters can still make people want to take to the skies with them one more time.
