Uncharted 4 Turns 10 as Naughty Dog Releases a PS5 Background
Naughty Dog has confirmed that, to mark the 10th anniversary of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, all PS5 players can claim a free exclusive Welcome Hub background. The design is based on Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and the unlock path is simple: open the PS5 Welcome Hub, choose Change Background, then find the limited theme under the Games tab.
A console background is usually a tiny thing, barely more than wallpaper for a system menu. In this case, though, it lands more like a brief look back after the credits. For longtime players, it is enough to pull the mind straight back to 2016, when Uncharted 4: A Thief's End first arrived and quickly became one of the defining games of the PS4 era.

That reputation was never just about spectacle. Yes, the shooting, climbing, and chase sequences mattered, but the more lasting achievement was narrative weight. The game took Nathan Drake, an adventurer built on momentum and danger, and gave him the sense of someone approaching a real ending. Its early and mid-game focus on family relationships is what makes that arc work: it spends time explaining why a man shaped by ruins and gunfire could be held, however briefly, by ordinary life, and why he is ultimately drawn back to adventure.
That character work is what keeps Uncharted 4 from feeling like a high-budget action machine. It plays more like a well-shaped series finale, one with the pace of a blockbuster and the aftertaste of a character drama. Ten years on, that is still why it gets cited as a benchmark.

Seen from that angle, what Naughty Dog is giving away here is not functional content so much as an emotional keepsake. It is free for all players, with no payment required, and that choice matters. Rather than putting up a gate, the studio is simply keeping the game visible. For series fans, that makes this an easy nostalgia bonus. For people who never played it, it works as a quiet invitation to take another look.
And that points to the deeper reason Uncharted 4 still holds its place. Plenty of later big-budget games learned to scale up the set pieces, but not all of them learned the same restraint in character relationships. The old tensions between brothers, the trust inside a marriage, and the pull between reckless adventure and adult responsibility are not pushed forward through grand declarations. They take shape gradually, through conversation and pauses. That is what makes the game feel so complete: the action is important, but the characters are what stay with you.

If you already own a PS5 and have any history with Uncharted, there is basically no reason not to claim this background. The steps are direct: enter the Welcome Hub, select Change Background, then apply the limited theme from the Games tab. If you are only passing by this announcement, the better takeaway may be to treat it as a reason to finally catch up. The real thing worth commemorating is not a system skin, but the fact that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End once proved a blockbuster game could tell a complete story and build characters that truly hold up.
