NBA 2K25 Forces 14-Day Online Check-In, Locks Out Offline Players

2K Games and Denuvo have rolled out stricter anti-tamper measures in NBA 2K25, NBA 2K26, and Marvel's Midnight Suns. Players must connect online every 14 days or the games won't launch.

The system uses fixed offline authorization tokens that expire after roughly two weeks. Once expired, launching the game offline becomes impossible—you must reconnect to refresh the token. Players who stick to NBA 2K26's offline modes report being forced online for verification every few days, which kills the experience.

The restriction isn't disclosed on Steam store pages, in the EULA, or during checkout. You pay full price only to discover you've bought a "license" with no offline freedom. Earlier Denuvo implementations only required online checks after major system changes—this version operates like a timed lock.

From a consumer rights standpoint, this crosses a line. While EULAs give publishers legal cover, the policy effectively strips access for travelers, users with unstable connections, or anyone who prefers offline play. 2K's move will likely push longtime fans toward alternatives—sports games and action RPGs aren't in short supply.
