On August 3, 2026, DottJapan announced Anomaly Maker, shared a concept PV, and confirmed the game for PC and Nintendo Switch. The official pitch is an anomaly creation and sharing simulator built on the "find-the-anomaly" format popularized by The Exit 8, but with the perspective reversed: players are not just hunting the anomaly. They are building it.
The reversal is the hook. This is not simply another game about staring at corridors and checking whether a poster, light fixture, or passerby has changed. The Exit 8 trained players to read a subway passage like a checklist. Anomaly Maker sounds more like part editor, part horror sketch, part community challenge. Instead of only looking for the detail that makes you stop, turn back, and second-guess yourself, you are the one manufacturing it.

The basic loop is easy to grasp. Players can combine scenes and assets to create anomalies such as object changes, character movements, and spatial inconsistencies, then publish completed anomaly stages for other players to challenge. That design targets the appeal of short-session content: quick pacing, immediate feedback, and little penalty for failure. It may not give FPS or action players the same snap satisfaction as pulling a trigger, but it has its own pressure. Every step becomes a small audit, and every detail can feel suspect.

The more important feature may be how players find those stages. When challenging other players' anomaly stages, players can use random matching, but they can also filter by discovery rate, clear rate, rating, and other indicators to find popular works or high-difficulty stages. If that browsing flow works, the community should sort itself into familiar groups. Some creators will chase moments built for livestream reactions. Some will build extreme misdirection. Others will make stages that help newcomers learn what to look for.
Its long-term appeal will not depend only on the size of the official asset library. It will depend on whether players can keep producing anomaly ideas that make other people want to share them after a single run.
There is also a story mode. DottJapan says Anomaly Maker will feature anomaly stages built by the development team with story content included. That mode matters because it can give players a baseline: what counts as a fair anomaly, what kind of misdirection feels sophisticated, and what pacing works when a livestream audience is guessing with the player. The studio has also said it is paying close attention to how the game works in gameplay videos and livestreams, with the goal of making a game that streamers and viewers can enjoy together. That statement more or less identifies the real test.

The practical read is simple. If you like observation-driven games such as The Exit 8 and also enjoy tinkering with editors, Anomaly Maker is worth putting on your watchlist. If you mainly want polished official stages, wait until the scale of the story mode and the quality of player-made stages come into clearer view. The PC version will likely be better suited to creation and filtering, while the Nintendo Switch version may be better for quick challenges. Whether it breaks out will not come down to how strange the concept PV looks, but whether the community can keep making new moments that leave players asking, "Did I just see that wrong?"
