Assassin’s Creed 4 remake is coming with new story content from the original writer
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Memory Reset is set for a global launch on July 9, and that date alone already sent our chat group into overdrive.

The remaster is officially titled Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Memory Reset, and the biggest headline is that original core writer Darby McDevitt is back to write new content himself. This is not a handoff to a replacement writer. It is the same creator who gave the pirate storyline its original punch. McDevitt also said one newly added sequence has become one of his favorite signature moments in the entire Black Flag narrative, which makes that addition especially meaningful.
The new material includes two fully standalone story segments, plus a fine-tuned revision of one key cutscene in the main storyline. All of this comes from ideas developed in recent years and was not part of the original design during the first Black Flag production. In other words, the writer had new concepts and folded them into the remaster. For longtime players who cleared the original multiple times, this means genuinely fresh content to experience.
The funniest part is that my roommate Xiao Li said he wants to play it with his girlfriend. I told him to be realistic: it is a single-player game, and having someone watch the story with you is already a win. Still, if Ubisoft ever adds a co-op mode, that would be ideal—just imagine four people sailing and raiding together.
With the July 9 global release lining up with summer break, the timing is great. My recommendation is to wait for day-one reviews before buying, since remasters do fail sometimes. But with Darby McDevitt attached, the risk feels manageable. If all goes well, things are about to get lively again.
