Assassin's Creed 4 remake removes hidden blade combat, players review-bomb in protest
Ubisoft announced during a Reddit AMA for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Memory Resurgence that the hidden blade will no longer function as an equippable combat weapon, retaining only execution and assassination capabilities.

The change demotes the series' signature weapon to a support tool. Edward Kenway's primary weapons are locked to dual cutlasses, with the hidden blade restricted to execution animations after breaking enemy defense, or stealth kills on unaware targets outside combat. The blade went from versatile to assassination-only.

Player backlash was immediate. The official announcement post dropped to -51 upvotes, flooded with comments calling the decision "terrible." Original Black Flag let players choose their approach—stealth assassinations or direct combat with the hidden blade as a counter option. The remake removes that choice entirely, forcing dual-cutlass combat. This isn't streamlining; it's feature removal.

Ubisoft likely believes standardizing the weapon system improves combat flow, but they're missing the point. Assassin's Creed's appeal never came from hack-and-slash mechanics—it came from the flexibility the "Assassin" identity provided. Even if hidden blade combat was underused, it was part of the series DNA. A remake should enhance it, not cut it.
The question now: will Ubisoft reverse course? The -51 score sends a clear message. If you're a Black Flag veteran, hold off on preordering. Paying full price for a stripped-down version isn't worth the risk.
