Assassin's Creed IV Remaster tops pre-orders in 8 countries as aging pirate formula still resonates
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Memory Resurgence topped PlayStation Store pre-order charts in 8 out of 9 regions last weekend, including the US, Canada, UK, Spain, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong. Only Japan didn't hand it the crown. Over on Steam, it landed at No. 7 on the bestseller list—solid numbers for a remaster.

Black Flag's comeback makes sense. Its Caribbean map remains a textbook case for open-world density: sail anywhere and you'll hit islands, shipwrecks, or treasure spots within minutes. Spot a Spanish galleon on the horizon? Fight or flee—your call. That freedom got diluted in later Assassin's Creed entries. Ubisoft clearly picked Black Flag over other titles because players still crave that "go anywhere" design.
The remaster faces stiff competition, though. Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred expansion and Soulframe both launch in the same window—Blizzard's loot grinder versus Sony's new IP bet. Further out, Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed Shadows looms, creating internal pressure. But Black Flag holds one edge: no game since has fully replicated its naval combat and exploration loop. That exclusivity became a rare commodity in the AAA space.
Pre-order data shows Western audiences still buy the pirate-meets-open-world combo, and the visual upgrade likely delivered enough punch. For completionists like me, clearing every Caribbean question mark in updated graphics justifies the price. The real risk? Ubisoft "optimizing" away exploration details during the remaster process—that'd kill the appeal.
