Avalanche Studios' next AAA open-world game surfaces after Just Cause series
Avalanche Studios posted several key job listings on their official site, revealing work on an unannounced AAA open-world game. As the creator of the Just Cause series, the Swedish studio's new project has naturally caught players' attention.

The listings show they need a senior technical designer to handle game systems, event scripting, and development tool construction. Crucially, the job description explicitly requires experience developing systems and events for open-world games. Another senior level designer position emphasizes fluid movement mechanics and highly interactive combat systems—sounds like Avalanche's specialty.
The project uses their in-house Apex engine, which previously powered Just Cause, Rage 2, and Mad Max. The listings don't mention which franchise this belongs to, so it could be a new IP entirely. Given they're still hiring core positions, the project is likely in fairly early development.

Avalanche has built solid experience in open-world action games over the years. Just Cause's physics-based destruction and vehicle systems remain their signature. If the new title refines combat feel and level design on that foundation, it's worth watching. Whether it's Just Cause 5 or something fresh won't be clear until official announcement. For players who enjoy wreaking havoc in open worlds, this is definitely good news.
