Palworld10 Games to Play While Waiting for GTA6 as Your Options Grow
TheGamer recently published a recommendation list of 10 games for the lull before GTA6 launches in November. The site argues that August is usually a quiet release period while the big fall games are still weeks away, but that the past five weeks have already pushed several games back into play through major updates, new content, ports, and subscription availability.
For simulation and sandbox players, the useful takeaway is not just finding something to play before GTA6. It is that TheGamer puts mechanically very different games in the same conversation. Open-world players often want variables, interaction, and self-directed plans, not just campaign length. That makes Palworld, Big Walk, and Mistfall Hunter more relevant than they might first appear, because all three depend on players to create the interesting moments.

Big Walk sits at No. 10. Built by House House, it is a co-op puzzle adventure game with no solo play, support for 2 to 12 players, and proximity voice chat as its core mechanism. On paper, that sounds less like a traditional mission-based sandbox and more like a social failure simulator with puzzle pieces attached. Its fun is likely to come from miscommunication, improvisation, and players getting in one another's way. That makes it a strong friends-list game, but a poor fit for lone players.
Palworld is No. 9, and the argument is more concrete. After two and a half years in early access, it reached version 1.0 in July, adding Sunreach, mutation and awakening systems, 72 Pals, and a level cap raised to 80. Its Steam concurrent player count hit 921485, putting it back in the platform's all-time top 15. Those are not small-update numbers. The 1.0 release refreshed the collection, base-building, combat, and progression loops enough to make the game feel active again. For players who want something with daily reasons to log in, it may last longer than many linear blockbusters.

The middle of the list is more about platform access and genre variety. Halo: Campaign Evolved is the first mainline Halo game to arrive on PlayStation, remaking the 2001 original campaign with four-player online co-op and two-player split-screen. It does not include competitive multiplayer. Pokemon Pokopia, meanwhile, launched in March and is described by TheGamer as the highest-rated Pokemon series entry on Metacritic. Last week it received its first paid expansion, Bubble Basin. One is a classic campaign pitch; the other is a lighter life-sim update. They are not chasing the same player.

As a buying recommendation, Mistfall Hunter is probably the lowest-risk pick because it is already on Game Pass. It is an extraction shooter built around melee combat, with three-player squads looting, dividing roles, and trying to leave before the timer runs out. After launching on Steam, it passed 40000 concurrent players and then entered the subscription library. That makes it easy to see whether its combat and extraction loop work before deciding whether to commit long term. Final Fantasy 14 arriving on Switch 2 is more like a new access point for existing players, but the Switch 2 version requires a separate purchase and subscription. Even with a 50% subscription discount for returning players, the platform cost matters.

The top of the list looks more like TheGamer's bet on what can hold attention before the fall rush. ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs is this month's sleeper casual game, combining electronics repair, story, and light management elements. Beast Of Reincarnation, from Game Freak, is a one-person-and-one-dog action RPG set in 4026 Japan. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced rebuilds the Caribbean world in the current Anvil engine and adds ray-traced water effects. At No. 1, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls frames its Marvel fighting game around shared team resources, with four characters sharing one health bar and matches opening as 2v2 fights.

What this list really shows is that the quiet release window no longer has to be filled only by brand-new games. Full releases, paid expansions, platform ports, remakes, and subscription additions can all push older projects back onto the player calendar. Anyone waiting for GTA6 and looking only for a direct substitute may come away disappointed. Taken as a way to sample different kinds of game structure, though, these 10 games are more useful: they help separate players who want open-world structure, co-op chaos, extraction pressure, or simply a sandbox loop that can keep running for weeks.
