Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare®Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Lands on Switch 2 Amid AI Controversy
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Is Coming to Nintendo Switch 2—And Yes, It Has AI-Generated Content
Activision has confirmed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will release on Nintendo Switch 2 sometime this year, marking the series' first foray into current-gen hardware while simultaneously adding Switch to its platform lineup. The Steam store page for the upcoming title already displays an AI-generated content disclosure, citing the same language used for last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 7—a game that faced intense backlash from players over what they called cheap, distracting AI-generated assets.
Infinity Ward and Activision are using generative AI tools to develop "some" in-game materials, but specifics remain sparse. The studio has not elaborated on which assets fall under AI assistance, leaving players to fill in the blanks with memories of Black Ops 7's controversial textures. That title drew heavy criticism when community members discovered widespread use of AI art, with the term "AI garbage" trending across forums and social media as players questioned the polish of a $70 release. Modern Warfare 4's disclosure hasn't quelled those concerns—it has, if anything, sharpened them.
The timing of the announcement matters here. Modern Warfare 4 isn't Infinity Ward's first rodeo; the studio has spent the past year absorbing player feedback on movement mechanics, multiplayer map design, and general game feel. Response times on community concerns have been notably faster than in previous cycles, and critical reception for recent entries has leaned positive. That track record cuts both ways: it suggests Infinity Ward cares about execution, but it also raises expectations for what the Switch 2 version will deliver.
Every major developer now leans on generative AI in some capacity—it's become an industry-standard tool rather than a novel experiment. The question isn't whether AI is present; it's how skillfully it's deployed. Octopath Traveler demonstrated that AI-assisted texture generation can produce cohesive, polished results when overseen by human artists with clear stylistic intent. The failures, like Black Ops 7, tend to happen when AI output gets pushed through without sufficient review.
For players who skipped Black Ops 7 or acclimated to its aesthetics, Modern Warfare 4 faces a cleaner slate. For those still burned by that experience, the Steam disclosure reads like a warning label. Whether Infinity Ward learned from last year's missteps will determine whether this title becomes a benchmark for AI implementation—or another cautionary tale.
The most reliable way to answer that question before launch: watch the June technical demo. Until concrete footage demonstrates how the AI-generated materials look in motion, the debate will remain theoretical. For a franchise launching on new hardware with a contentious technology baked into its marketing, theory is all Activision has offered so far.
